Main Purpose of Job

The Geologist III/Remedial Project Manager (RPM) position\r\nwithin the Federal Assessment and Remediation Division provides state oversight\r\nfor environmental investigations and remediation at federal facilities. This\r\nrole requires the application of theoretical and practical knowledge in\r\ngeology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics to evaluate site-specific response\r\nactions. The incumbent must be proficient in using geological cross-sections,\r\nmaps, and field sampling methodologies. While reporting to a Geologist\r\nSupervisor, the individual is expected to work independently at headquarters,\r\nfield sites, and off-site meetings.\r\n\r\n\r\nKey responsibilities include:\r\n\r\n Perform\r\n duties in conjunction with the Department and War, and security clearance\r\n is required.\r\n Ensuring\r\n state regulations are addressed during technical investigations.\r\n Assessing\r\n the nature and extent of contamination across all media, with a specific\r\n focus on groundwater and the restoration of state water resources.\r\n Evaluating\r\n potential threats to human health and the environment.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe working conditions for this position include the following:�\r\n\r\n This\r\n position requires the physical ability to wear a full-face respirator, the\r\n completion of a 40-hour health and safety training course, and the ability\r\n to walk long distances over rough terrain.\r\n\r\n\r\n While\r\n not a routine part of the job, the incumbent may occasionally be required\r\n to visit sites or attend meetings during inclement weather.\r\n\r\n\r\n Inspection\r\n of sites potentially contaminated with hazardous substances. These\r\n inspections are conducted in accordance with all appropriate procedures\r\n and regulations, including 29 CFR Part 1910.\r\n\r\n\r\n The\r\n use�of personal protective equipment (PPE) during on-site\r\n inspections. This equipment routinely includes hard-hats and steel-toed\r\n shoes and may be upgraded to include respirators and chemical protective\r\n gear depending on site-specific conditions.\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must satisfy the minimum qualifications to be considered for this position and move forward in the hiring process. �Please read all requirements before applying.\r\nEducation:�� A Bachelor’s degree from an\r\naccredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related\r\nearth science.\r\nExperience: Three years of experience performing\r\nprofessional geological work.\r\nNotes:\r\n1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s\r\ndegree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental\r\nGeology or a related earth science for the required education and one year\r\nof the required experience.\r\n2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces\r\nmilitary service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher\r\nas a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical\r\nscience specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis\r\nfor the required education.\r\n\r\n\r\n�\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Please note that your answers to the supplemental questionnaire must correspond to the information provided on your application to receive credit.\r\nIt is preferred that the selected candidate has the\r\nfollowing: \r\n\r\n Experience\r\n working with the Department of War in an environmental aspect.\r\n Experience\r\n working with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and\r\n Liability Act (CERCLA).\r\n Bachelor’s\r\n or master’s degree in one of the following disciplines:� Geology,\r\n Sedimentology, Hydrology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, or Environmental\r\n Engineering.\r\n\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n2. Depending on the assigned essential functions of the work, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website. \r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment. \r\n2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. \r\n3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. \r\n4.�The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Medical\r\nMonitoring Program (MMP) is designed to detect health risks or adverse effects\r\nof occupational exposure to hazardous materials and to direct targeted\r\ntreatment and occupational illness/injury prevention strategies.� MDE\r\nemployees who may be exposed to hazardous materials are required to participate\r\nin a pre-placement, regular and/or post-termination medical examination.\r\nMDE has determined that this position be part of the MMP; therefore, applicants\r\nselected for employment must successfully complete and pass the medical\r\nmonitoring examination as a condition of employment. ​Information regarding the\r\nMMP is provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be\r\nobtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration website.\r\n\r\n
