Accounting Manager / Controller

We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager / Controller with a strong background in CPG and inventory-based businesses to oversee accounting operations and maintain accurate financial reporting across multiple ecommerce and wholesale sales channels.

The ideal candidate understands the accounting complexities that come with physical-product businesses, particularly inventory, cost of goods sold (COGS), and the reconciliation of sales activity across Shopify, Amazon, and wholesale channels.

This role requires more than general bookkeeping experience. We are looking for someone who understands how inventory movements affect the financial statements, can maintain accurate COGS and inventory accounting, and can independently identify and resolve discrepancies across multiple sales channels.

• Manage day-to-day accounting operations and maintain accurate financial records

• Own or oversee monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes

• Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules

• Maintain the general ledger and ensure transactions are properly classified

• Review balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies

• Ensure financial records are complete, accurate, and delivered on schedule

• Maintain appropriate accounting documentation and supporting records

• Manage accounting for inventory-based CPG businesses

• Maintain accurate inventory balances and COGS calculations

• Reconcile inventory activity between accounting records, ecommerce platforms, marketplaces, and other relevant systems

• Review inventory purchases, receipts, adjustments, transfers, and write-offs

• Identify and investigate inventory discrepancies

• Ensure inventory movements are appropriately reflected in the general ledger

• Support inventory valuation and period-end inventory reconciliations

• Monitor the impact of inventory and COGS on gross margin and financial reporting

• Manage and reconcile financial activity from Shopify and Amazon

• Reconcile sales, refunds, fees, discounts, chargebacks, and marketplace payouts

• Ensure ecommerce transactions are accurately recorded in the accounting system

• Investigate discrepancies between sales platforms, bank activity, inventory records, and the general ledger

• Maintain accurate accounting across multiple online sales channels

• Manage accounting activity related to wholesale sales

• Reconcile wholesale revenue, customer payments, and related transactions

• Maintain accurate accounts receivable records

• Monitor outstanding balances and support collections where appropriate

• Ensure wholesale revenue and COGS are accurately reflected in financial reporting

• Reconcile wholesale activity with inventory movements

• Prepare and review monthly financial statements

• Maintain accurate P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow reporting

• Analyze gross margin, COGS, inventory, and other key financial metrics

• Identify unusual trends, discrepancies, or accounting issues

• Provide leadership with clear and reliable financial information

• Support management reporting and financial analysis as needed

• Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes

• Review vendor bills and payment activity for proper coding and documentation

• Monitor customer receivables and outstanding balances

• Ensure AP and AR subledgers reconcile to the general ledger

• Maintain accurate vendor and customer accounting records

• Maintain strong accounting controls and documentation

• Develop and improve accounting workflows, reconciliations, and close procedures

• Identify weaknesses or inefficiencies in existing accounting processes

• Create and maintain SOPs where appropriate

• Improve the accuracy and scalability of accounting operations

• Ensure consistent accounting treatment across channels and entities

• Significant professional accounting experience, ideally at the Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, Assistant Controller, or Controller level

• Direct accounting experience with CPG, ecommerce, retail, or another inventory-intensive physical-product business

• Strong hands-on experience with inventory accounting and COGS

• Experience reconciling inventory and resolving inventory discrepancies

• Strong understanding of inventory valuation and its impact on financial statements

• Accounting experience with Shopify

• Accounting experience with Amazon marketplace transactions and settlements

• Experience supporting wholesale accounting

• Experience with multi-channel revenue and transaction reconciliation

• Experience with inventory management or ERP systems

• Experience with 3PL inventory reconciliation

• Experience accounting for landed costs, freight, duties, and other inventory-related costs

• Strong general-ledger accounting experience

• Experience owning or substantially supporting the month-end close

• Strong balance-sheet reconciliation skills

• Experience preparing and/or reviewing financial statements

• Strong understanding of accrual accounting

• Experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable

• Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills

• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

• High attention to detail and commitment to financial accuracy

• Ability to identify and resolve accounting discrepancies independently

• Strong written communication skills

• Ability to work independently in a remote environment

• CPA or equivalent accounting qualification

• Experience working with multiple CPG/ecommerce brands

• Experience within an accounting firm, outsourced accounting practice, or fractional finance environment

• QuickBooks Online experience

• Experience with Amazon settlement reconciliation tools or ecommerce accounting integrations

• Experience with multi-entity accounting

• Experience building accounting SOPs, controls, and close processes

• Experience managing or reviewing the work of junior accountants/bookkeepers
