Software Engineer Intern
Quick Summary
Write, test, and optimize C/C++ code for bare-metal microcontroller environments.
Strong understanding of MCU architecture, including GPIO configuration, interrupt service routines (ISRs), timers, ADCs, and memory constraints.
At Motorola Solutions, we believe that everything starts with our people. We’re a global close-knit community, united by the relentless pursuit to help keep people safer everywhere. We build and connect technologies to help protect people, property and places. Our solutions foster the collaboration that’s critical for safer communities, safer schools, safer hospitals, safer businesses, and ultimately, safer nations. Connect with a career that matters, and help us build a safer future.
Responsibilities
~1 min read- →Firmware Development: Write, test, and optimize C/C++ code for bare-metal microcontroller environments.
- →Protocol Implementation: Develop and test low-level driver code to establish reliable communication between the MCU and peripheral ICs using I2C and 1-Wire protocols.
- →Hardware Bring-Up & Testing: Assist in bringing up new custom prototype boards, verifying correct pin mappings, voltage levels, and clock configurations.
- →System Debugging: Isolate and resolve complex hardware-software integration issues using a combination of firmware stepping and physical measurement tools.
- →Documentation: Document driver logic, API usage, and hardware test results for the broader engineering team.
Requirements
~1 min read- Microcontroller (MCU) Fundamentals: Strong understanding of MCU architecture, including GPIO configuration, interrupt service routines (ISRs), timers, ADCs, and memory constraints.
- Embedded C/C++: Proficiency in writing efficient, hardware-level C or C++ code. Bitwise operations and pointer manipulation should be second nature.
- Serial Communication Protocols: Solid theoretical understanding and practical experience with I2C (addressing, clock stretching, pull-up resistor sizing, ACK/NACK behavior).Familiarity with the 1-Wire bus protocol (timing constraints, presence pulses, ROM commands).
- Hardware Debugging Skills: Hands-on experience using hardware diagnostic tools such as:Logic analyzers (to decode I2C/1-Wire bus traffic and verify timing requirements).Oscilloscopes (to check signal integrity, capacitance issues, and rise/fall times).Multimeters and JTAG debuggers.
- Education: Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
