Maine People’s Alliance is Hiring!

Maine People's Alliance (MPA) is a community of Maine people, from all different backgrounds, who believe that we can live in a world where everyone has what they need, everyone contributes what they can, and nobody is left behind.

While there are more than enough resources to meet everyone’s basic needs, a small number of wealthy interests use tactics like racism to divide us, maintaining a society where they benefit at everyone else’s expense. That is why we must overcome division with community, cynicism with relentless moral courage, changing – not accepting – what is politically possible.

MPA community organizers and organizing fellows are responsible for helping the organization build a multi-racial, multi-class movement by recruiting new members, developing their leadership, and building a volunteer team that works to advance the priorities of the organization including economic and racial justice.

We are currently accepting applications for part-time, temporary Organizing Fellows to work for a period of up to six months. The ideal candidate
should
be interested in this role as part of exploring a career in social change and/or in building a new set of skills to apply to existing social change volunteer work in Maine.

Community Organizing Fellows

The responsibilities of these positions will include supporting MPA’s campaigns through:

Developing a team of engaged MPA members in a region

Recruiting new and existing MPA members

Identifying leadership potential in MPA volunteers, and developing work plans that provide opportunities for new skills and leadership opportunities

Engaging MPA members in elections

Recruiting 1 new monthly MPA donor per week

Supporting other campaign activities as they arise

A qualified applicant should possess:

Direct, lived experience with injustice (of any kind) that anchors a desire for progressive social change

Self-motivation and an ability to successfully work independently, as part of a team, and as a team leader.

Ability to inspire others to action

Ability to move multiple projects and prioritize

A willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and occasional weekends

Experience that is helpful but not necessary:

Experience in door-to-door canvassing

At least one year of community organizing experience or community-building work

Experience fundraising

Fluency in Spanish, French, Arabic, or Somali are welcome

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

These positions are based in Maine and will report to MPA’s Campaigns Director, Rachel Ackoff.

We’re prioritizing building volunteer teams in the following regions/counties but will consider applicants statewide:

  • Northern Maine (Aroostook, Piscataquis)
  • Eastern Maine (Hancock and Washington)
  • Western Maine (Franklin, Somerset)
  • Mid-Coast Maine (Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Waldo)

We are prioritizing Muslim community organizing, rural organizing, and veterans organizing.

The Organizing Fellow position is part time, temporary, up to 20 hours a week, up to six months, with flexible scheduling and paid hourly at $21.55 an hour.

The role is part of the MPA staff union (Union Contract) and offers mileage reimbursement.

MPA is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to equity and inclusion. Core to our work is an understanding of the multiple ways in which society is constructed to disadvantage and marginalize people of color, LGBTQ people, immigrants, native peoples, women, low-income people, people with disabilities, and others. We believe that underrepresented and marginalized communities must be centered in the work we do and we strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or from these communities.
