Veterinary Laboratory Technologist II

The Office of Professional Education in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University invites applications from outstanding individuals for the position of Veterinary Laboratory Technologist. The College of Veterinary Medicine offers an Accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Program. The Veterinary Laboratory Technologist will deliver laboratory and didactic educational information as well as other duties to DVM students to meet the American Veterinary Medical Association committee of Education Standards for Curriculum.

The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching and continuous improvement of veterinary student anatomy and clinical skills laboratories as part of the pre-clinical DVM curriculum. Responsibilities will include preparation and maintenance of cadaveric prosections for anatomical instruction, pre-clinical laboratory instruction, and the supervision and assisting in the assessment of DVM students. The applicant will also provide teaching of animal patient care techniques in the LeBlanc Clinical Skills Lab and other teaching labs within the College of Veterinary Medicine.

65%     Teaching Support:

• Preparation and pro-section of anatomical specimens, specimen preservation and repair, new specimen/model development
• Demonstration of proper clinical skills techniques
• Instruction, demonstration, supervision and assisting with assessment of DVM students

20%     Coordination and Communication Support

15%     Daily Operations:

• Record keeping and inventory
• Equipment and facility maintenance

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Medical Technology, Zoology or other related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience preparing pro-sections of dogs, cats, ruminants, and horses and teaching anatomy laboratories to veterinary students. Preference will be given to those licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan.

Works with animals and unfixed animal tissue. TB risk or work within 3 feet of human patients in a health care setting or have potential exposure to animals or to specimens with Micro-bacterium.
