The NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is the state government agency created to conserve and sustain the state’s fish and wildlife resources through research, scientific management, wise use and public input. The NCWRC is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of North Carolina’s fishing, hunting, trapping, and boating laws. The agency has an operational budget of approximately $100 million and employs approximately 700 full-time staff and 100 seasonal temporary staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, and customer service, information technology and administrative professionals. The NCWRC Mission is to conserve North Carolina’s wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for an Aquatic Habitat Research Coordinator (Conservation Biologist II) for the Inland Fisheries Division.

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Inland Fisheries Division manages, conserves, enhances, and restores the State’s freshwater fishes, mollusks, crayfish and supporting aquatic habitats through fisheries research, fisheries management, hatchery operation, and habitat conservation.

The Aquatic Habitat Research Coordinator is responsible for designing, coordinating, and conducting aquatic habitat enhancement projects and research statewide. The position serves as a liaison between the Commission and other state and federal agencies, universities, tribes, and private organizations; providing technical guidance and information transfer to them. Activities are conducted statewide. Some projects may involve the temporary supervision of one or more conservation technicians, temporary employees, interns, or volunteers. The position is responsible for facility operations at both the Sykes Aquatic Habitat Nursery and Sykes Depot.

The schedule associated with this position is Monday-Friday; 40 hours per week. This position has statewide responsibilities and requires seasonal travel. Assignments, work, and projects may be based in any location across the state. This position will be based out of our Wildlife Resources Commission Sykes Depot in Mebane, NC (Alamance County).


RECRUITMENT RANGE: $63,927 - $ 72,770

  • Ability to identify native and non-native aquatic plants found in North Carolina and surrounding states.
  • Demonstrated experience with horticulture of native aquatic plants.
  • Knowledge of aquatic ecosystems and fisheries management in North Carolina.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan aquatic habitat projects.
  • Experience utilizing outside partners and volunteers including angling groups and other conservation minded organizations to complete projects.
