Position 60013540 - Code Official II / State Fire Prevention Inspector
Recruitment Salary Range: $52,592 – $82,400
Salary Grade: NC14

This position is home based/remote and requires extensive travel throughout the state, from Charlotte to Brunswick, including overnight stays, and occasional weekend hours.
The North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal is seeking a knowledgeable and committed State Fire Prevention Inspector to conduct inspections of state owned properties for compliance with the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code and applicable NFPA standards. This position identifies life safety hazards, prepares inspection reports, assists with code interpretations, and supports fire investigations. The role may also include training responsibilities and disaster related inspections. The position serves on the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) with 24/7 on call responsibility.
Key Responsibilities:
• Perform required annual and special inspections of state owned buildings and equipment.
• Report fire code deficiencies and coordinate corrective action with agencies.
• Conduct emergency and after hours inspections as needed to ensure public safety.
• Schedule and inspect pyrotechnic displays on state property, including college campuses.
• Prepare and submit inspection reports for OSFM documentation and insurance review.
• Provide educational materials, teach at professional associations, and represent OSFM at conferences.
• Conduct fire investigations with OSFM Fire Investigation Unit, SBI, ATF, or local agencies; submit reports and testify as needed.
•Participate in SERT deployments, assisting with equipment setup, maintenance and inventory, take part in full scale emergency training drills, and engage in extended emergency operations in potentially harsh environments.
· NC Certification as Fire Inspector III
· Minimum of 3 years’ experience performing fire prevention inspections on government owned buildings
· Minimum of 3 years’ experience performing inspections for pyrotechnics

High school or General Educational Development (GED); and 5 years of building code enforcement experience with a minimum of 2 Level III Code Official Certifications, or experience as a supervisor, director, or chief code official of a jurisdiction; or 2 years of code enforcement experience a supervisor, director or chief code official of a jurisdiction, and 4 years of journey level construction experience; or An equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications
Must possess a minimum of two of the following trades:(Building, Fire, Electrical) and a maximum of four North Carolina Code Officials Qualifications Board Standard Level III Certificates, with three in Building, Fire, Electrical, and one in Plumbing, or Mechanical, or pre- qualify for a minimum of two of the following trades:(Building, Fire, Electrical) at the time of hire and obtain all certifications within one year.
