The Assistant Director, MSW Intern Education Program, Student Wellness Programs for New York Medical College ("NYMC") Office of Student Mental Health & Wellness ("OSMHW") reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor and provides leadership in MSW clinical training, supervision, and clinical coordination within the Office. This role is essential to the Office’s functioning and supports the development of high-quality, ethical, and developmentally appropriate care through a robust MSW internship education program. The Assistant Director maintains a full clinical caseload while assuming primary responsibility for MSW intern supervision, training, and clinical governance.
Responsibilities
~1 min readUnder the direction of, and in collaboration with the Associate Vice Chancellor of SMHW, the Assistant Director, MSW Intern Education Program, Student Wellness Programs will perform the following duties and responsibilities:
- Deliver short term individual therapy and provide a needs-based assessment, including triage, clinical consultation, coordinating treatment with other professionals, and providing community referrals when indicated.
- Crisis intervention.
- Minimum of 3-4 clients per 5-hour work-day.
- Maintain case load and terminate as clinically indicated to prioritize urgent student needs.
- Collaboration and communication (written and verbal) with internal student support staff and Deans, on behalf of students as indicated or as requested.
- Provide culturally sensitive clinical services to students, students from diverse backgrounds, and students with intersecting identities.
- Participate in after hours and office hours intervention(s) as needed.
- Maintain strict adherence to FERPA and HIPAA guidelines and confidentiality practices.
- Be available for other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice Chancellor of the Office of SMHW.
- Serve as the primary supervisor for MSW students placed with the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness through local graduate training programs.
- Provide oversight of intern clinical decision-making, assessment, treatment planning, documentation, and professional development.
- Prepare and educate MSW interns to be able to offer high quality clinical services to student population.
- Manage intern selection process.
- Provide direct and indirect supervision and oversight of all clinical and programmatic work, in collaboration with AVC.
- Facilitate MSW case conferences, guiding interns’ clinical formulation, use of theory, ethical reasoning, and application of evidence-informed practice.
- Monitor intern progress and readiness for practice, offering structured feedback and developmental support.
- Act as the primary liaison with the Graduate Schools of Social Work.
- Develop and deliver in-service trainings for students and/or staff.
- Manage and maintain training and onboarding calendar and related materials.
- Inform the AVC of any changes or requirements to maintain excellent standing with each of the Graduate programs.
- Play an increasing leadership role in clinical coordination and governance related to the MSW internship program.
- Support quality assurance efforts by promoting consistency in clinical practice, documentation, and supervision standards.
- Collaborate with departmental leadership to advance training excellence and program sustainability.
- Actively participate in student wellness programming and activities.
- Contribute to key committees and working groups that support student wellbeing initiatives and institutional wellness priorities.
- Foster collaborative relationships with campus partners to promote a holistic and integrated approach to student mental health and wellness.
- Participating in weekly all-staff meetings.
- Report on students, and communicate outcomes, next steps and needs to the Associate Vice Chancellor.
- Initiate any follow up on needs identified at supervision meetings, including creating a written summary, updating internal documentation in EMR, and internal high-risk list.
- Follow up required with all other internal and external providers involved in the client’s care.
Requirements
~2 min read- Licensed Mental Health Professional, doctoral (Ph.D., PsyD, EdD) or Masters (LCSW-R).
- Minimum of ten (10) years of clinical experience post-licensure, preferably in a health professions education or academic setting.
- Knowledge of appropriately applying principals of FERPA and HIPAA to daily practice in an academic setting.
- New York State License.
- Demonstrated compliance with continuing education requirements according to Licensure.
- Seminar Training in Field Instruction (SIFI) Certification is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; strong planning, project management and organizational skills.
- Strong commitment to workplace honesty, discretion, integrity, direct communication, teamwork, collaboration, and professional ethics.
- Demonstrated ability, expertise, and clinical experience in:o Conducting brief individual and group psychotherapy sessions.o Performing clinical intake interviews, psycho-diagnostic assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment plan formulation.o Provision of crisis intervention and trauma-informed care.o Knowledge and experience managing a broad spectrum of psychological issues/diagnoses, co- morbidities, and high-risk clients.o Providing counseling to students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse identities including based on race, gender, sexual preference, disability status, religion, socio-economic background, age, and others.o Appropriate and accurate use of an Electronic Health Record effectively for documenting provided mental health care and services.o A broad range of psychotherapy and counseling methods.o Developing and implementing outreach programs and presentations.o Providing clinical supervision to trainees and mental health professionals.
- Office-based work (in-person, hybrid), may include travel to community partnerships.
