Senior Fullstack Engineer (Java + React.js)
Quick Summary
Drive the technical design and end-to-end implementation of complex features,
Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues (backend and frontend), perform root cause analysis (RCAs), and enhance system observability, logging, and metrics.
Okta is the leading independent provider of enterprise identity. The Okta Identity Cloud enables organizations to securely connect the right people to the right technologies at the right time. With over 6,500 pre-built integrations to
applications and infrastructure providers, Okta customers can easily and securely use the best technologies for their business. Over 7,950 organizations, including 20th Century Fox, JetBlue, Nordstrom, Slack, Teach for America, and Twilio,
trust Okta to help protect the identities of their workforces and customers.
We are seeking an experienced Full Stack Senior Software Engineer to play a key role in building and scaling the Okta Recovery Vault (ORV). This team is responsible for Okta's enterprise-grade soft-delete and object recovery capability,
designed to protect critical identity objects (Users and Groups) from accidental or malicious deletion.
As a Senior Engineer, you will own the technical design, implementation, and operational reliability of critical components within our real-time, high-fidelity recovery system — spanning backend services and the admin-facing UI that customers
use to review and restore their data. You will solve complex engineering problems around identity preservation (UUIDs) and relationship restoration—including group memberships, app assignments, and password hashes—while also crafting
intuitive, performant workflows that let admins confidently recover from data loss events.
Responsibilities
~2 min read- Feature Execution: Drive the technical design and end-to-end implementation of complex features, such as granular and bulk recovery workflows across Free and Advanced Resilience tiers — from backend APIs to the admin console UI.
- Component Design: Design and build reliable core components for real-time recovery systems that capture deletion events, support scalable data restoration, and surface clear, actionable recovery status to end users.
- UI/UX for Recovery Workflows: Build responsive, accessible front-end experiences (e.g., recovery dashboards, bulk restore flows, audit views) that make complex backend recovery operations easy for admins to understand and act on.
- Relationship & State Management: Solve challenging engineering problems around relationship restoration (group memberships, app assignments, device enrollments) and state consistency, and reflect that state accurately in the UI.
- Security & Compliance: Implement secure logging and tracking for all recovery operations (soft-delete, restore, permanent-delete) in Syslog to adhere to strict audit and compliance standards.
- Product & Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner with Product Managers, Designers, and technical leads to clarify requirements, define technical scope, and break down complex projects into actionable milestones across the stack.
- Operational Excellence: Participate in on-call rotations, troubleshoot production issues (backend and frontend), perform root cause analysis (RCAs), and enhance system observability, logging, and metrics.
- Code Quality & Technical Standards: Champion engineering best practices through thorough code reviews, automated testing (unit, integration, and UI), and comprehensive technical documentation.
- Team Growth: Provide guidance and peer mentorship to intermediate and junior engineers on the team to foster technical growth and code quality across the full stack.
- Experience: 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience building and scaling highly reliable, production-grade full stack applications.
- Backend Expertise: Strong proficiency in object-oriented programming, with extensive experience in Java and the Spring Boot framework.
- Frontend Expertise: Solid experience building modern, component-based web UIs (e.g., React, TypeScript) including state management, performance optimization, and accessibility best practices.
- Distributed Systems: Solid experience with distributed system patterns, asynchronous job processing, and event-driven architectures (essential for bulk restore operations).
- Data Management: Proficiency with relational databases (e.g., MySQL) and caching strategies (e.g., Redis) to manage state and high-throughput data snapshots.
- API Design: Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining robust RESTful APIs, and consuming them to build seamless, responsive front-end experiences.
- Problem Solving & Ownership: Proven track record of independently breaking down ambiguous requirements into clean, scalable software designs across the entire stack.
Nice to Have
~1 min read- Familiarity with Identity and Access Management (IAM) standards (SCIM, SAML, OAuth, OIDC) or directory services (AD, LDAP).
- Experience with resilient systems design (e.g., retry strategies, circuit breakers, rate limiting).
- Hands-on experience with feature flagging frameworks and gradual/canary deployment strategies.
- Experience with queueing systems or message brokers (e.g., Kafka).
- Experience with design systems / component libraries and cross-browser/responsive UI testing.
B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
