Program Manager – School Zone Safety
The Ottawa Safety Council (OSC) is seeking dedicated and community-minded individuals to join our team as School Crossing Guards for the 2025–2026 school year. In this vital role, you will help ensure the safety of children and other pedestrians at designated school crossings during peak school hours.
Whether you're a student (16+), stay-at-home parent, retiree, or simply someone who wants to make a difference in your community, we welcome applicants from all walks of life.
Please note that this is an existing, recently vacant position.
Responsibilities

Direct or escort pedestrians across the street, stopping traffic as necessary.

Maintain focus and avoid disruptions while escorting students and pedestrians across the street.
- →
Communicate traffic, crossing rules, and other information to students and adults.
- →
Report unsafe student behaviour to school officials.
- →
Inspect your intersection daily and report any unsafe conditions to the Ottawa Safety Council and/or the City of Ottawa.

Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross.

Be aware of emergency vehicles approaching the area and ensure that they have priority over vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

Record license plates of dangerous motorists and report to appropriate officials.

Comply with all safety requirements and wear all required equipment (provided).

Always maintain a calm and professional demeanor.
- →
Maintain a visible and professional presence at your assigned crossing.
Shifts range from 40 minutes to 2 hours
School Crossing Guards must be available for at least 5 shifts per week, Monday to Friday, with up to 2 shifts per day—one in the morning and one in the afternoon—for a total of 10 possible shifts weekly.
Operational School Year (August to June)
School Crossing Guards are paid per shift.
