Winchman

Position Overview

The Winchman is responsible for the operation, repair, and maintenance of engines and winches on the assigned spud barge, along with maintenance and repair of other equipment associated with the barge. Spud barges are primarily used for rock placement on the Inland and Western waterways. The successful candidate must work and communicate effectively with the tender boat crew and line boat crew, recognize hazards, understand river conditions, and evaluate marine rigging and equipment.

This role is a key contributor to our goal of "Incident Free Operations," partnering with the assigned SSHO in Safety Huddles, Safety Meetings, and the development of Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).

Key Responsibilities

• Operate, repair, and maintain engines, winches, and related equipment on the assigned spud barge.
• Conduct pre-operation inspections of winches, wire rope/cable, rigging, and related equipment; identify and report worn, damaged, or defective gear.
• Communicate clearly with tender boat and line boat crews using standard hand signals and/or radio communication.
• Monitor river conditions, weather, and load/rigging conditions to ensure safe operations.
• Recognize hazards and communicate them promptly to supervisors.
• Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and minor repairs on winch and barge equipment.
• Maintain accurate logs of operations, maintenance activities, and incidents.
• Participate in Safety Huddles, Safety Meetings, and JSA development.
• Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with all crew members.
• Stop operations immediately if unsafe conditions arise.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED (required).
• Vocational/technical training in rigging, marine operations, or winch operation is a plus.

• Minimum 2 years' experience working in a marine environment on the Inland waterways, particularly the Mississippi River, is beneficial.
• Prior experience as a winchman, deckhand, or rigger preferred.

• Valid driver's license (required, must be maintained).
• First Aid/CPR certification a plus.
• Rigging or marine safety certifications a plus.

• Ability and willingness to work 10–12 hours per day.
• Flexibility and willingness to work extended duty or "hitch" as work and conditions require.
• Ability to perform manual labor, including climbing ladders/stairs and repetitive bending and stooping.
• Must complete an on-boarding physical and exertion function test with a physical therapist after acceptance of offer.
• Must be comfortable working over and adjacent to water, including willingness to participate in water rescue.
• Ability to work in severe duty marine conditions, including inclement weather.

• Assigned a spud barge on Inland and Western waterways (especially the Mississippi River).
• Exposure to weather elements, noise, vibration, and moving machinery.
• Extended duty/hitch schedule; must be available for consistent duty and report to assigned job location.
