Disaster Risk Reduction Advisor

Experienced disaster risk reduction (DRR) professionals are needed in the Philippines to strengthen the country’s resource management and DRR strategies.

The Philippines is among the world’s most vulnerable countries to environmental threats and natural disasters, making proactive, science-based adaptation essential. The Philippine government has implemented nationwide initiatives to expand community capacities, fortify vulnerable sectors, and safeguard critical ecosystems. All government agencies are mandated to anticipate, respond to, and mitigate the impacts of environmental stressors. State universities and colleges complement these efforts with their technical expertise and research functions, which generate localized data that can be analyzed to inform responsive environmental and DRR strategies.

As a Disaster Risk Reduction Advisor, you will collaborate with local government entities and higher education institutes to enhance environmental and DRR education, support data-driven decision-making, and reinforce policy frameworks. Through improved data collection and monitoring systems, you will enable communities to anticipate hazards, respond more effectively, and build enduring resilience. Your efforts will ultimately mean stronger community-level preparedness.

Bachelor's degree in any field related to disaster risk reduction, preparedness, resilience, or emergency management.
AND
Two or more years of experience in disaster risk reduction, preparedness, resilience, or emergency management programs.

The Volunteer live will independently in a modest house or apartment with access to basic amenities like water, electricity, cell phone reception, kitchen, and toilet. The Volunteer will be able to walk or take public transportation to markets, pharmacies, internet cafes, churches, and banks.

Gain international experience applying environmental adaptation and resilience strategies in Southeast Asia.
Learn Tagalog from skilled language and intercultural facilitators.

Strengthen project management, data analysis, and public speaking skills while partnering with local leaders to sustain long-term preparedness initiatives.

Conduct assessment on environmental issues, research, and other data-gathering activities.

Develop or strengthen environmental and DRR policy frameworks.

Assist in the design, preparation, and development of training modules and advocacy materials.

Conduct workshops, conferences, seminars, or symposia with stakeholders.

Develop or enhance data management monitoring strategies.
Promote multidisciplinary or cross-functional interface activities with the community stakeholders.

Advise on partnership development and relationship-building strategies for government agencies, non-government organizations, and civil societies.

Support the preparation of project funding proposals.
Deliver environmental and DRR education in formal and informal settings.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as teaching leadership and teamwork through sports.

After 2 weeks of orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to either an urban or rural community where you will collaborate with a government agency or a higher education institution. You will work with the community to assess the needs and develop strategic solutions based on the work plan developed and the national policy frameworks.

Peace Corps/Philippines will help equip you with language resources and you may work with a tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
