English Education Advisor

Experienced educators are invited to support students in Madagascar in building strong English communication skills and in training teachers on effective language-learning strategies.

The country continues to face persistent challenges in delivering consistent, high‑quality English education. Large class sizes, limited teaching resources, and outdated instructional methods make it difficult for students to develop the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills essential for academic success and future employment. As English becomes increasingly important for opportunities in tourism, health, technology, and competitive scholarship programs, many educators need updated methodologies and professional support to meet these growing demands. Strengthening English teaching practices—through improved course materials, enhanced university‑level curricula, teacher training, library development, and expanded English instruction—is key to improving student outcomes nationwide.

As an English Education Advisor, you will help advance these goals by promoting stronger professional networks among educators, encouraging innovative classroom practices, improving English proficiency among youth, and expanding academic and career pathways throughout Madagascar.

Bachelor's or master's degree in English, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), English as a Second Language (ESL), Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), applied linguistics, or in any discipline with secondary education state certification in English, TEFL, TESOL, ESL, TESL, or a foreign language.
AND
Two or more years of teaching experience in a TEFL or TESOL setting.

The Volunteers will live in a large town or city within the East Coast, Highland, and North-West regions. Housing usually consists of a private one- or two-room home with limited electricity or intermittent connectivity. Volunteers can expect to live within a 30-minute walk from the work site. Water access varies by location and may involve drawing water from a communal tap or well. Latrines and bucket baths are common.

Advance your experience in teaching English as a foreign language to support Malagasy students and teachers.

Deepen your expertise in learning theory, assessment design, and technology integration.

Expand your global mindset by creating lasting connections with Malagasy communities and learning their traditions and culture.

Plan and teach communicative English lessons in formal classroom settings and facilitate interactive English conversation clubs.

Develop, revise or update English teaching materials, course syllabi, and contextualized teaching resources or toolkits.

Model student-centered, interactive instructional approaches that promote real communication and learner engagement.

Support the design of English assessments and placement systems to ensure accurate, meaningful evaluation of student learning.

Provide technical guidance for curriculum development aligned with national needs.

Strengthen peer‑support systems and teacher learning communities to promote collaboration and continuous professional growth.

Design and facilitate teacher‑training workshops that build practical skills, confidence, and long‑term instructional capacity.

Advise on integrating technology and authentic materials in English instruction to support innovation in teaching.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as establishing a mentorship program or facilitating a book club.

After a five‑week training on topics such as health and safety, you will move to an urban or semi‑urban community where you will collaborate with educators to assess language-learning needs and develop a work plan aligned with partner goals.

Peace Corps/Madagascar will equip you with Malagasy language resources, and you may work with a tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
