English Language Arts Educator

Secondary schools in Nepal are looking to explore new teaching practices and technology for improved English language skills, and you can lend a hand!

Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology has identified that the lack of qualified English-speaking instructors in rural areas has severely affected their goal of increasing English learning opportunities to all citizens. National and local leadership are committed to adopting secure, reliable technology that expands the capacity of teachers, digital literacy skills, and the use of research-based classroom practices.

As an English Language Arts Educator, you will collaborate with primary and secondary school staff to integrate creative and engaging teaching methods for English, science technology, engineering, arts, and math instruction. Together, you will also create dynamic extracurricular programming for students and teachers alike.

Bachelor's degree in any discipline.

Volunteers will live in the Gandaki province with a host family but can expect a private room. Volunteers usually walk several miles every day on hilly terrain to work in both hot and cold weather, as well as during the monsoon season from June through September.

Gain international experience teaching English as a second or foreign language.
Build lifelong connections with colleagues and community members.

Develop the capacity of local teachers to use and teach English more effectively.
Model research-based classroom practices for teachers to adopt.
Organize extracurricular activities for students, such as camps, clubs, and mentoring programs.
Provide individual tutoring to ensure no student is left behind.
Identify opportunities to engage community members in student learning.
You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as digital literacy skill workshops or pen pal exchanges with American students.

As an English Language Arts Educator, you will be trained on the country’s curriculum and effective classroom practices. Peace Corps/Nepal will teach you Nepali to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community. You will also receive language resources to learn key phrases in a local language used in your assigned community.

After 10 weeks of training, you will move to rural or peri-urban community where you will collaborate with school staff to assess the local needs and develop solutions that foster a creative and effective learning environment.
