English Teacher

Viet Nam’s Ministry of Education and Training is looking for experienced educators and recent graduates to strengthen in-country English language skills.

Viet Nam’s education system is extending its 7-year English curriculum to ten years, and new language competency standards have been set for both teachers and college graduates. Families who are unable to invest in private tutoring are struggling to meet the basic standards. Public high schools are requesting native English speakers to support language acquisition in the classroom and adequately prepare students for national exams.

As an English Teacher, you will collaborate with school staff to strengthen English language learning, with an emphasis on speaking and comprehension. By engaging in daily conversations at the school and with the larger community, you will enhance intercultural understanding between Vietnamese and Americans.

Qualified candidates must have one of the following:

Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline and a strong desire to teach English

Volunteers will live on school compounds on the outskirts of Ha Noi or Ho Chi Minh City districts.

Make history as one of the first Peace Corps Education Volunteers to serve in Viet Nam.
Develop transferable teaching and classroom management skills.
Learn Vietnamese from dedicated Language and Cross-Culture Facilitators.

Assess students' existing English language skills.
Prepare interactive teaching aids, games, and classroom materials.
Facilitate effective English classes that meet the national curricula and support various learning styles.
Foster intercultural exchange opportunities.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community's interests and priorities, such as an after-school English club.

As an English teacher, you will be trained to support English language acquisition in a high school classroom. Peace Corps/Viet Nam will teach you Vietnamese to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community.

After 10 weeks of training, you will move to a rural village where you will collaborate with English teachers and school staff. Together, you will strengthen formal instruction and create informal opportunities for students to become more confident communicating in English.
