English Teacher

Cambodian schools are seeking individuals with a passion for English language learning to prepare students in grades 4-12 for academic and professional success.

English language skills are highly valued by employers across Cambodia, especially international business, international development, and tourism. To prepare students for these opportunities, Cambodia is modernizing its education system by strengthening English language instruction and expanding digital literacy. These efforts will also foster a workforce that can support the country’s transition to a digital economy. The Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport (MoEYS) is prioritizing English education. However, many schools continue to face a shortage of qualified English teachers as there are limited resources for recruiting, training, and providing competitive pay for teachers.

As an English Teacher, you will teach alongside Cambodian teachers, integrating effective student-centered teaching strategies aimed at improving English proficiency. You will facilitate extracurricular activities and projects that will serve as additional language and life skill development opportunities. Your service will contribute to the country’s long-term goals of developing a resilient, innovative workforce.

Bachelor's degree in any discipline.

Volunteers can expect a private room within a host family’s house and will share living and dining spaces. The Volunteer may also share a bathroom with a bucket shower and squat toilet. There is varying access to electricity and internet in the rural towns and villages. Volunteers should have the ability to ride a bicycle up to 5 miles daily. Volunteers will be placed in one of the following provinces: Takeo, Kampot, Kampong Speu, Prey Veng, Tbong Khmum, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Thom, Pursat, Battambang, Siem Reap, Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, and Ratanakiri.

Develop project design and management skills by implementing a real community development project from start to finish.

Receive technical training and hands-on experience that will transfer to teach English anywhere.

Develop Khmer language skills and a deeper understanding of Southeast Asian history that will prepare you for a global career.

Teach engaging English classes that support various proficiency levels and learning styles.

Provide professional development opportunities for teachers and school staff.

Monitor student progress and improve teaching methodology with your co-teachers.

Facilitate after-school tutoring and English clubs for additional practice.

Teach leadership and life skills to students through sports, art clubs, mentorship programs, health and nutrition education, or developing a community garden.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as teaching digital literacy or developing a school library.

As an English Teacher, you will receive training on teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), project design and management best practices, and Cambodian culture. Peace Corps/Cambodia will train you in the Khmer language to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community.

After 10 weeks of training, you will move to a community where you will collaborate with co-teachers and school directors in public primary and secondary schools. You will work with community members and educators to assess learning needs and develop student-centered solutions.
