Classrooms across Sri Lanka are seeking recent graduates and experienced educators to support English language learning.

English is widely recognized in Sri Lanka as an important skill for employment and as a crucial “link language” between Sinhala and Tamil speakers. Although the Ministry of Education actively promotes trilingual education, many Sinhala speakers do not understand Tamil, and many Tamil speakers do not understand Sinhala. This makes English an essential bridge for effective communication. Despite this need, opportunities to practice English with fluent speakers remain limited, particularly in rural areas where exposure to natural, conversational English are rare. These challenges, combined with the increasing need for English proficiency in higher education and in both local and international job markets, create a strong need for additional support.

As an English Teacher, you will work alongside school staff to strengthen speaking and listening skills for both students and teachers. Together, you will enhance classroom instruction through improved teaching methodologies, creative enrichment activities, and more effective lesson planning. Through everyday interactions, you will also help deepen intercultural understanding between Sri Lankans and Americans.
Bachelor's degree in any discipline.
Volunteers usually live in rural, agricultural communities and commute to their assigned workplaces by foot, bicycle, or public transportation. They are housed in private rooms within host family residences throughout their service. Host family homes have electricity and running water, and shower facilities may be located either inside or outside the house. All communities have cell phone coverage, which allows for Internet access. While individual homes may not always have strong cellular reception, most do.
Receive intensive training in Sinhala or Tamil, gaining language skills that strengthen your foundation for a successful career in international development.
Build marketable teaching and literacy‑support skills through hands‑on classroom experience and structured training.
Experience beautiful Sri Lankan culture while building lasting relationships.
Prepare engaging teaching aids, games, and classroom materials.
Facilitate effective English lessons aligned with the national curriculum and responsive to various learning styles.
Lead school-based communities of practice and conduct formal teacher workshops.
Organize after-school English clubs to help students build confidence communicating in English.
Plan and facilitate English camps during school holidays to reinforce learning through interactive, hands‑on activities.
Encourage parents and community members to participate in and support students’ learning.

You may also lead additional activities that reflect community interests and priorities, including after‑school conversation clubs or cultural exchange events.
As an English Teacher, you will receive training on the national curriculum, effective classroom management practices, and student-centered teaching methodologies. Peace Corps/Sri Lanka will teach you Sinhala or Tamil to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community.

After 11 weeks of training, you will move to a rural community where you will collaborate with school staff to assess learning needs and create practical, resource-based solutions.
