English Teacher Trainer

Are you eager to learn as much as you teach? A school in Zambia is waiting for you.

English is the official language of Zambia, yet only 2 percent of the population speaks English as a first language. Some Zambians, especially in rural areas, never acquire any proficiency in English. While the Ministry of Education’s curriculum is currently undergoing revisions that may impact classroom instruction, classes are still taught in the local language.

As an English Teacher Trainer, you will support the development of language skills. Through daily conversations with students, teacher, and the community, you will provide opportunities for them
to practice their English and communicate more confidently.

Competitive candidates will have:
Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree in any discipline and a strong desire to teach English

Volunteers live in traditional houses in rural villages.

Gain transferable experience teaching English as a Second Language
Learn one of Zambia’s native languages from skilled Language and Cross-Culture Facilitator

How you and the community will make an impact together:

Develop engaging lesson plans, visual aids, and teaching materials based on the national curriculum
Facilitate literacy-focused activities, events, and in some cases, classes
Exchange ideas and knowledge with teachers through Communities of Practice
Engage the surrounding community for school improvements and student learning
Implement women empowerment activities that are contextually appropriate

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as a pen pal exchange or school garden.

As an English Teacher Trainer, you will be trained to support classroom instruction and various student proficiency levels. Peace Corps/Zambia will teach you on of the local languages to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community.

After 10 weeks of training, you will move to a rural community where you will collaborate with local teachers and school staff. Together, you will assess the local needs and develop solutions that support the students’ academic and professional opportunities.
