High School English and STEM Teacher

Communities in Sierra Leone are looking for aspiring and experienced teachers to support high school students succeed academically for a promising future.



One of the greatest challenges in Sierra Leone’s education system is ensuring that young people stay engaged and supported throughout their learning journey, particularly in communities with limited resources and technology. A recent survey discovered that nearly one in four children between the ages of 6 and 18 was not attending school, and two thirds of those out-of-school children had never enrolled. The students who attend school still face barriers to learn. Many shoulder extensive household responsibilities before and after school, while others are raised by caregivers who may be unable to prioritize their education. Some walk long distances to school, often arriving hungry and exhausted. At home, a lack of emotional support can impact the children’s self-esteem and confidence, making them less likely to participate in class or persist through academic challenges. Education has become a national priority, and communities across the country are working with renewed energy to create brighter opportunities for their youth.



As a High School English and STEM Teacher, you will collaborate with Sierra Leonean educators to develop and implement effective teaching strategies—ensuring all students feel supported and challenged. Together, you’ll facilitate student-centered activities, develop classroom resources, and nurture a positive reading culture. Your efforts will elevate students’ achievements and contribute to the country’s growth.

Bachelor's degree in any discipline.

The Volunteer will reside in one of the country’s eastern, southern, or northern regions, in modest housing—often two rooms plus a small parlor—with either an indoor or outdoor bathroom. Shortly after arrival, the Volunteer will receive a local SIM card for their smartphone; however, the Volunteer should be prepared for inconsistent cell service and internet connectivity. While public transportation is available, a bicycle can be provided to interested Volunteers.

Acquire practical training on science, technology, English, and mathematics (STEM) approaches that will support your teaching profession.

Learn Krio from skilled language and intercultural facilitators.

Enjoy living in a multi-cultural environment while building lasting connections with community members.

Collaborate with teachers to incorporate research-based teaching practices.

Prepare lesson plans that expand subject-specific vocabulary.

Teach engaging English, math, or science lessons that cater to different proficiency levels and learning styles.

Create low-cost instructional aids and classroom materials that complement the national curriculum.

Strengthen assessment practices to adequately prepare the students for national exams.

Identify opportunities to integrate life skills lessons into existing subjects.
Design activities and projects that promote learning outside the classroom.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as a reading club or a health club.

As a High School English and STEM Teacher, you will be trained on effective lesson planning, classroom management best practices, and student-centered methodologies. Peace Corps/Sierra Leone will teach you Krio to help you comfortably live in and connect with the community. You will also receive language resources to learn a site language such as Mende, Temne, Mandingo, Limba, Kono, Susu, Koranko, Fullah, or Loko.

After 10 weeks of training, you will move to a rural community where you will collaborate with school staff. You will work with the community to assess the learning needs and develop solutions based on the national curriculum requirements and available resources.
