High School Math Teacher

Liberia is looking for math teachers to strengthen instruction and learning outcomes for grades 9-12.

Mathematics achievement remains a significant challenge nationwide. Many students struggle with foundational numeracy, algebra readiness, and problem-solving due to limited instructional materials, overcrowded classrooms, and a lack of trained math teachers. National assessments consistently reveal gaps in math proficiency, especially in rural areas. As Liberia’s government prioritizes improved workforce readiness, economic growth, and educational equity, strengthening the country’s math education has become essential.

As a High School Math Teacher, you will collaborate with school staff to strengthen instructional techniques, build students’ confidence, and develop sustainable resources. Over time, your efforts will contribute to stronger student performance, raise pass rates, and expand access to quality math education.

Bachelor's degree in secondary education with a concentration in math.
OR
Bachelor's degree in any discipline with secondary certification in math.
OR
Bachelor's degree in math, engineering, or computer science.
OR
Bachelor's degree in any discipline with a minor or equivalent in math.

The Volunteer will live in a self-contained apartment or house with a separate kitchen, bathroom, and sitting area. Housing in rural areas may have inconsistent running water or electricity. The Volunteer should be prepared for an outdoor pit latrine and to bathe using a bucket. Limited cell coverage should also be expected in some areas.

Build stronger classroom instructional skills in mathematics by applying effective teaching strategies, improving lesson delivery, and engaging students in active learning.
Gain practical experience designing exercises that strengthen numeracy, algebraic reasoning, and problem-solving skills in resource-limited classrooms.
Form meaningful relationships while learning about Liberia’s history and culture.

Teach math lessons aligned with the national curriculum and connect concepts to real‑world applications.

Create student-centered, interactive instructional materials.

Model classroom strategies that strengthen numeracy, algebra, geometry, and problem-solving skills.

Lead small group or remedial lessons to reinforce key concepts.

Use simple assessment tools to track student progress and inform instruction.

Collaborate with school leaders to advance math‑focused initiatives and improve instructional quality.

Encourage parent and community involvement in supporting students’ math learning.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as supporting math clubs or computer literacy workshops.

As a High School Math Teacher, you will be trained on strategies for strengthening numeracy, student-centered teaching methods, and methods for supporting learners with varied math readiness. Peace Corps/Liberia will teach you Liberian English to help you connect with your school and community. You may work with a tutor to learn Kpelle, Lorma, Gio, Mano or Bassa languages.

After 10 weeks of training, you will move to a rural or bustling town community where you will collaborate with school staff to assess learning needs and develop solutions based on the curriculum and available resources.
