Literacy Education Advisor

Schools in Liberia are seeking experienced educators to support literacy efforts and developing confident, independent readers.

Low literacy rates remain one of Liberia’s most persistent education challenges, especially in early grades where students often lack the foundational skills needed for lifelong learning. Limited access to age-appropriate materials, overcrowded classrooms, and limited access to professional development opportunities continue to affect student achievement, especially in rural communities. As a result, many children fall behind and never reach their full potential. Recognizing that literacy is essential to educational success, economic opportunity, and national development, the Government of Liberia has made improving literacy a national priority.

As a Literacy Education Advisor, you will support educators to strengthen classroom instruction and foster engaging, literacy-rich learning environments. Together, you will implement targeted interventions for struggling students and model effective, student-centered classroom strategies. Over time, your efforts will expand literacy opportunities and contribute to the country’s lasting educational progress.

Bachelor's degree in literacy education or relevant field.
AND
Three or more years of experience in literacy education.

The Volunteer will serve in urban or semi-urban communities either Margibi, Bong, Lofa, Nimba or Grand Gedeh County. The Volunteer will live in a self-contained apartment or house with a separate kitchen, bathroom and sitting area. Housing may have inconsistent running water or electricity. The Volunteer should be prepared for an outdoor latrine and to bathe using a bucket. Limited cell coverage should also be expected in some areas.

Become a confident instructional coach, modeling effective approaches and supporting teacher development.

Form meaningful relationships while learning about Liberia’s history and culture.

Conduct diagnostic assessments to identify gaps in literacy content knowledge.

Support the development of child-friendly classroom routines and instructional practices.

Model teaching and learning methods with local educators.

Plan and facilitate communities of practice for teachers.

Support small group reading sessions to reinforce foundational literacy skills.

Assist with basic school improvement plans or literacy-focused initiatives.

Facilitate community or parent engagement activities that promote early-grade reading.

Mentor teachers through informal coaching, modeling, and shared reflection.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as after-school reading clubs and health clubs.

After a two-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to an urban or semi-urban community where you will collaborate with elementary schools or teacher training institutions to assess the learning needs and develop a work plan in line with their goals and the national curriculum.

Peace Corps/Liberia will equip you with Liberian English language resources and you may work with a tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
