Literacy Education Trainer

Belize is seeking experienced early childhood literacy educators to strengthen foundational reading skills.

Belize continues to face significant obstacles in early literacy achievement. According to a 2024 UNICEF survey, less than a quarter of first-grade students demonstrated adequate reading skills. Many of these first-grade students are reading below a kindergarten level, reflecting gaps in early phonological awareness, limited exposure to systematic phonics instruction, and the additional language support needed. Strengthening early childhood literacy is a priority for schools under the government management. Since 2017, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology (MoECST) has prioritized improving the teachers’ capacity in delivering effective, research-based instruction at the elementary level.

As a Literacy Education Trainer, you will continue developing teachers’ skills to integrate systematic phonological awareness routines, explicit phonics instruction, and practices aligned with the science of reading. Together, you will also identify students who could benefit from remedial tutoring. Your efforts will lead to more consistent, evidence-based instruction and improved early reading readiness, ultimately improving student achievement and national learning outcomes.

Bachelor's degree in literacy education or relevant field.
AND
Three or more years of experience in literacy education.

The Volunteer should expect modest housing, such as a small apartment or house with basic amenities, within the Central Region. The Volunteer should expect to commute by bus, bike, or on foot to the work site. Electricity, running water, and internet connection will be readily available.

Expand your early childhood or literacy education expertise by gaining a deeper understanding of the unique learning challenges faced by students in South America.
Develop Kriol and Spanish language skills while building meaningful relationships in a new community.
Immerse yourself in Belizean culture—from the traditional dance and food to the multicultural customs and languages.

Support the planning and facilitation of evidence-based early literacy instruction for kindergarten and first-grade students.
Model phonological awareness and phonics routines aligned with the reading readiness program.
Observe classroom instruction and provide feedback and support to the teachers.
Assist teachers in incorporating strategies that strengthen English reading readiness.
Review early literacy assessment data and plan instructional adjustments.
Help identify students who need additional support and assist teachers in implementing related activities.
Develop or adapt teaching and learning materials that reinforce early literacy skills.
Engage families and caregivers in simple, practical strategies to support at-home reading.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as expanding school libraries or facilitating reading clubs.

After a two-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to an urban community where you will collaborate with your school to assess the learning needs and develop a work plan in line with their established goals.

Peace Corps/Belize will equip you with limited Kriol and Spanish language resources and you may work with a local tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
