STEM Education Trainer

Want to transform classrooms into spaces of discovery? Liberia is seeking experienced science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educators to strengthen instructional practices at universities and teacher training institutes.

Liberia’s education system continues to rebuild after years of conflict that disrupted schooling and displaced teachers. While progress has been made, many educators still have limited access to professional development in hands-on STEM instruction, and students often have few opportunities to engage with experiential learning, problem-solving, and applied scientific inquiry. To address these challenges, the Ministry of Education and partner institutions—including universities, rural teacher training institutes, and secondary schools—are strengthening teacher preparation. The Ministry is also expanding access to structured mathematics curricula resources, laboratory-based learning, and locally relevant STEM initiatives.

As a STEM Education Trainer, you will support these efforts by coaching teachers, modeling activity-based science and mathematics instruction as well as reinforcing strategies aligned with the national curriculum. Through collaboration with faculty and teachers, you will deliver engaging, inquiry-based STEM education that improves student achievement, increases examination pass rates, and expands access to high-quality STEM learning for future generations.

Bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), or in a related field (e.g., education) with a teaching certification.
AND
Two or more years of teaching experience in one of the following areas: math, chemistry, physics, computer science, biology, earth sciences, or art.

The Volunteer will serve in either Margibi, Bong, Lofa, Nimba or Grand Gedeh county. The Volunteer will live in an apartment or house with a separate kitchen, bathroom, and sitting area. Access to electricity and running water may be inconsistent. The Volunteer should be prepared for an outdoor latrine and to bathe using a bucket. Limited cell coverage should also be expected in some areas.

Form meaningful relationships while learning about Liberia’s history and culture.

Conduct diagnostic assessments to identify gaps in STEM content knowledge.

Model student-centered STEM lessons for teachers.

Plan and teach practical STEM lessons.

Coach teachers in using manipulatives and low-cost materials to teach foundational and advanced STEM concepts.

Support teachers in developing structured lesson plans and formatting assessments.

Reinforce teachers’ ability to scaffold STEM concepts and facilitate problem-solving activities.

Assist teachers in integrating numeracy into science and technology lessons.

Collaborate with school leadership and education officers to strengthen math programming and sustainability.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as supporting STEM clubs and computer literacy workshops.

After a two-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to an urban or semi-urban community where you will collaborate with the staff at universities or teacher training intuitions to assess learning needs and develop a work plan aligned with the curricula.

Peace Corps/Liberia will equip you with Liberian English language resources and you may work with a tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
