TEFL Teacher Trainer

If you're passionate about education, language, and intercultural exchange, teacher training colleges in Rwanda invite you to help prepare active or student teachers.

In 2008, Rwanda adopted English as the national medium of instruction, marking a significant shift in its education system. However, the transition from French to English in classrooms is still relatively recent, and both teachers and students are working hard to build their confidence and fluency.

As a TEFL Teacher Trainer, you will ensure that primary school teachers are not only proficient in English but also effective in teaching the language. Your collaborative work will focus on strengthening both language proficiency levels and teaching capacities through hands-on support, creative engagement, and professional development.

Competitive candidates will have one or more of the following criteria:

Bachelor of Arts in Education, Library Sciences or other relevant field
OR
2 or more years of relevant work experience

Volunteers will live in peri-urban communities and will pay for their own water and electricity using a portion of their monthly living allowance.

Make a meaningful contribution to Rwanda’s educational development.
Practice speaking French in a new country and learn key phrases in Kinyarwanda.
Gain valuable insight into educational practices and challenges in East Africa.

Plan and teach English lessons that develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
Mentor teachers on effective teaching methodologies and classroom strategies.
Lead communication-focused lessons and workshops to help tutors and teachers improve their English fluency and confidence.
Organize and monitor interclass competitions that promote English communication and friendly academic engagement.
Accompany student teachers during school visits and teaching practicums, offering guidance and group feedback.
Support professional development for tutors, student teachers, and elementary English teachers.

You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as a debate or movie club.

After a 2-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to a peri-urban community where you will collaborate with local educators. You will work with aspiring teachers and your community to assess the local needs and develop a work plan in line with their established goals.

Peace Corps Rwanda will equip you with Kinyarwanda language training and you may work with a local tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community.
