This is an Expression of Interest (EOI), not an open vacancy. We review submissions on a rolling basis. If a suitable position opens, we will contact shortlisted candidates who meet the selection criteria. We are unable to respond to individual EOI inquiries.
About the Role
You will support two survey activities ahead of the 2027 long rains season:
- Listing survey: identifying farmers who plan to grow tomatoes or potatoes.
- Baseline survey: interviewing selected farmers.
You will also help recruit lead farmers and other farmers in the study villages. Field Officers visit farmers, recruit them, and conduct interviews. Senior Field Officers lead teams of Field Officers and make sure all work follows the study protocol.
Specific counties: Nyandarua, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Machakos, Embu, Kajiado and Nakuru.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Officers
- Visit study villages and work with village elders to identify farmers for the listing survey
- Collect nominations of trusted farmers, then screen nominees against the selection criteria in person.
- Recruit lead farmers and other farmers following the agreed procedure
- Explain the study, the time commitment, and what lead farmers are expected to do clearly and honestly, including that the lead farmer role is unpaid
- Conduct in-person listing and baseline interviews on a tablet using SurveyCTO, read the consent script and record each farmer's decision correctly
- Collect GPS data for farmers' plots where required
- Record all information accurately, on time and confidentially
- Follow the study protocol closely and report any problems to your Senior Field Officer quickly
- Attend trainings and regular check-ins
Senior Field Officers:
- Perform Field Officer tasks when needed
- Guide and support Field Officers day-to-day and run regular check-ins
- Track team progress against targets, such as farmers listed and surveys completed per village
- Review records and submitted data for completeness and errors, and follow up with the team on data quality issues
- Spot and report problems early, such as villages falling behind or protocol steps being skipped
- Escalate issues and send regular updates to the Field Manager and Research team
- Help train and coach Field Officers
What We're Looking For:
All candidates
- Diploma in a relevant field
- At least 1 year of field data collection experience, ideally in agricultural surveys, listing surveys, field observations or similar community-level work with farmers
- Skill with SurveyCTO or a similar digital data collection platform, including entering and submitting data on a smartphone or tablet
- Close attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality data
- Good organization and reporting skills
- Good spoken and written English
- Ability to speak the main local language of the study area (strongly preferred)
- Willingness to travel to farms across multiple clusters
- Experience managing a field team (required for SFO)
- Good judgment, clear communication, and the confidence to give constructive feedback
Terms of engagement: This role doesn't include a per diem or accommodation allowance, but we will cover work-related transport and communication costs. Candidates must be willing to work wherever they are posted on these terms, so applicants based in or near the study areas are encouraged to apply.

About PxD
PxD is a global non-profit that harnesses the power of technology, data science, and behavioral economics to provide targeted information to farmers in low- and middle-income countries. Providing the right information to the right people, in the right way and at the right time, increases incomes, protects the environment, and improves well-being. We are evidence-based: we test our interventions with randomized controlled trials to prove our impact and cost-effectiveness, to simultaneously learn from and improve our service, and to demonstrate our value to funders and partners. There are few programmes in international development that are as demonstrably cost-effective as ours.
