Pulse Doctors are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Consultant to contribute across both the anaesthetic and critical care services.

Responsibilities

- →Provide consultant-delivered anaesthesia across a range of surgical specialties, including general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, gynaecology, and ENT.
- →Participate in the emergency and out-of-hours anaesthetic on-call rota, including cover for obstetric anaesthesia, trauma, and emergency surgery.
- →Lead and contribute to pre-operative assessment, ensuring safe and efficient preparation of surgical patients.
- →Provide clinical oversight and mentorship for anaesthetic trainees, ODPs, and other clinical staff within the department.
- →Contribute to the development of anaesthetic subspecialty services in line with departmental need and personal expertise.
- Provide consultant-led care on the Intensive Care Unit, managing a broad range of Level 2 and Level 3 patients including medical, surgical, and peri-operative presentations.
- Lead the daily clinical management of ICU patients, including ward rounds, clinical decision-making, and family communication.
- Oversee the safe management of mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, renal replacement therapy, and other organ support modalities.
- Contribute to the critical care on-call rota, providing timely senior decision-making for acutely deteriorating patients across the Trust.
- Engage with critical care outreach and deteriorating patient initiatives to support patient safety across the wider hospital.
- Actively participate in departmental governance, morbidity & mortality review, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to simulation training, difficult airway drills, and departmental safety programmes.
- Support the training and development of junior medical staff, including ACCS and higher specialist trainees.
- Engage with Trust-wide patient safety and quality improvement agendas, including perioperative care pathways.
- Maintain and develop clinical expertise in line with RCoA and FICM Continuing Professional Development requirements.
Requirements
~1 min read- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthetics, or within six months of eligibility at the time of interview.
- FRCA or equivalent specialist qualification.
- FICM or equivalent critical care qualification (or evidence of substantial dual training in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine).
- Completion of a recognised higher specialist training programme or equivalent.
- Demonstrable experience across a broad range of elective and emergency anaesthesia at consultant or senior registrar level.
- Competence in the independent management of Level 2 and Level 3 critical care patients.
- Proficiency in core procedural skills including airway management, central venous access, arterial line insertion, and point-of-care ultrasound.
- Experience in obstetric anaesthesia and the management of emergency perioperative scenarios.
- Ability to contribute to an on-call rota and work independently as a consultant from appointment.
- Evidence of engagement with clinical governance, audit, and patient safety improvement.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with patients, families and colleagues across clinical settings.
- A calm, decisive approach to high-pressure clinical environments and complex decision-making.
- Collaborative and supportive team player with a genuine commitment to MDT working.
- Enthusiasm for working in a district general hospital and contributing to the local community it serves.

- Permanent or fixed-term salaried NHS Consultant contract: £113,565 - £150,569 (Depending on Experience).
