As a result, you stay up to date with emerging trends and tools in the learning industry, including appropriate use of AI in learning development. You feel capable and excited to work with the qualifications and skills outlined here, although you don’t need to have expertise in all areas.
What's the Job?
As a Learning Designer, you will contribute to the design and development of impactful, results-driven training systems for our products and clients. In our flexible, remote workplace, you will report to the Director of Delivery and create with guidance from the Director of Design and/or Senior Learning Designers. You will collaborate with a team that may include Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Learning Designers, Project Managers, and Artists.
You will be the learner’s advocate. Applying your instructional design skills and learning technology expertise, you will work directly with clients from needs analysis to deployment to design, build, and test engaging learning experiences using tools such as Office 365, Slack, Jira, and Articulate 360.
Learning solutions that you may help bring to our clients to solve their training issues include:
- Updating curriculum to address gaps and to effectively reach new audiences or goals for our defense and aerospace clients
- Transferring face-to-face training to a blended model by leading the design of new programs, distributed learning courseware, LMS course architecture and reporting, and onboarding programs
- Integrating a task trainer or simulator into existing programs to build confidence, develop skills, or address skill fade
- Evaluating the success of a learning product by utilizing available technologies and developing user testing or piloting strategies
What will you do?
- Collaborate to determine a client’s training needs:
- Uncover who learners are and their characteristics, the tasks of a position, and what successful performance of these tasks looks like
- Work with the client and subject matter experts to identify resources for developing learning materials
- Support clients in understanding the best media and technologies to meet training needs
- Supporting needs assessments to discover shortfalls in job performance and current training
- Outlining learning objectives and proposing training solutions to help learners achieve optimal performance in their roles
- Supporting the definition of program strategies and guidelines in planning and design documents
- Apply your Learning Design expertise to produce deliverables depending on the project scope and timeline:
- Break down complex information into an engaging and easy-to-understand format
- Create lesson plans or storyboards for media-rich eLearning courses, scenarios-based learning, and a variety of assessments according to instructional design principles and in collaboration with SMEs and Artists
- Build and publish content using eLearning software
- Examine, review, and correct content for accuracy, consistency, and accessible learner experience
- Test eLearning packages in Learning Management Systems (LMS) and assessing effectiveness, including SCORM/xAPI reporting
- Work closely with a Project Manager to inform process and requirement documentation, and to continuously prioritize, mitigate risks, and adjust expectations to maintain a cohesive vision throughout the project
- Work with other Learning Designers to grow and enhance your discipline expertise and best practices
Qualifications / Skills:
- A minimum of 3 years in instructional design including:
- Demonstrable experience designing effective online, blended and/or distance learning experiences (Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate and work with Learning Management Systems, SCORM, and/or xAPI an asset)
- Experience designing a variety of instructional materials
- Experience completing Training Needs/Gap Analysis
- Experience applying generative AI to a learning design workflow for efficiency while maintaining accuracy and relevance to learning goals
- Proficiency in eLearning authoring tools (multimedia and graphics software are an asset)
- Strong understanding of adult learning theories and design methodologies
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate with colleagues and clients with confidence, clarity, transparency and passion
- Ability to work independently with and without supervision on longer term projects as well as in small cross-functional, task-oriented teams on short term goals
- An inclusive and collaborative approach to work in a diverse, multi-disciplinary team
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or college diploma (preferably in education, adult learning, distance learning or related)

RaceRocks is a remote-first company with team members across Canada, with an office for optional use in Victoria, BC. Team members are required to be available for team building and collaboration during core operating hours of 9:00 am to 2:00 pm Pacific Time. Outside of core working hours, we offer flexibility to support work-life balance. Although our HQ is in Victoria, BC we are open to hiring candidates from nearly anywhere in Canada. At this time, we do not have the infrastructure to support hiring candidates from Quebec or to hire/support working internationally.
