Chief Technology Officer

Sourcing promising scientific innovations, patents, university spin-outs, and early-stage science-led companies, this position drives technology scouting and commercialisation strategy. The primary outcome of the role is to assess commercial potential, coordinate specialist due diligence, and recommend whether to invest, licence, partner, or form new ventures. Working 30 to 40 hours per month on a fully remote basis as an independent contractor, this cross-border position requires flexibility for international calls spanning Asian close and United States open market hours. This role involves building access across research and industry networks, maintaining a structured opportunity pipeline, analysing technology and platform requirements, evaluating intellectual property ownership, and recommending optimal routes to market. Key Responsibilities Source scientists, inventors, patents, research programmes, university spin-outs, and early-stage companies aligned with investment focus. Build and maintain relationships across universities, research institutes, technology transfer offices, founders, incubators, venture funds, and corporate innovation teams. Maintain an opportunity pipeline spanning initial screening, diligence, investment decision, and commercial follow-up. Evaluate scientific evidence, technology differentiation, intellectual property ownership, platform requirements, route to market, scalability, and principal risks. Coordinate scientific, intellectual property, regulatory, technical, and commercial diligence. Formulate investment, licensing, partnership, acquisition, incubation, or company formation recommendations. Establish clear scientific and technology screening criteria and map priority networks for direct outreach. Introduce standardised initial reviews covering evidence, IP ownership, commercial potential, and risk factors. Requirements Proven experience sourcing scientific technologies, intellectual property, university spin-outs, or early-stage companies. Established, credible network across universities, research institutes, technology transfer offices, founders, or investors. Demonstrated ability to analyse technology and platform requirements to determine investment or business development viability. Working knowledge of patents, licensing, inventorship, and intellectual property ownership. Sound commercial judgement with the ability to engage credibly with scientists, founders, investors, and corporate partners. Sound judgement on confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and ownership of work product. Cross-border availability to participate in calls across Asian and United States time zones. Desirable Requirements Experience in biotech, pharma, life sciences, medtech, diagnostics, deep tech, or another science-led field. Background in technology transfer, external innovation, venture capital, corporate venturing, or venture building. Experience supporting university spin-outs and progressing research towards commercial products. Business growth and development experience distinguishing scalable potential from market-constrained opportunities.
