Position Summary: 

The Roving MHPSS Officer will support the integration and scale-up of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services within Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). The officer will focus on building the capacity of clinical officers to provide quality mental health consultations, improving uptake of mental health services, and ensuring continuity of care through structured follow-up and case management.

The role involves rotating between two counties to provide technical support, mentorship, and supervision to field teams. The officer will also review complex mental health cases, conduct regular performance review meetings, and strengthen referral and follow-up systems for mental health patients.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

Roving MHPSS Officer will be responsible for:

  • Providing technical support to clinical officers in delivering mental health consultations in line with mhGAP and national guidelines,
  • Conducting on-the-job training, mentorship, and supportive supervision of clinical staff on MHPSS services,
  • Reviewing critical and complex mental health cases and guiding appropriate case management and referrals,
  • Supporting diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up care for patients with mental health conditions,
  • Conducting weekly meetings with clinical officers to review progress, challenges, and performance of mental health activities,
  • Ensuring proper documentation and reporting of mental health consultations and activities,
  • Strengthening referral pathways between community, MMUs, and higher-level care for mental health cases,
  • Supporting follow-up of mental health patients in collaboration with community health workers and outreach teams,
  • Promoting community awareness and acceptance of mental health services to improve service uptake,
  • Monitoring quality of MHPSS services and ensuring adherence to standards and protocols,
  • Supporting integration of MHPSS into primary healthcare services at MMUs,
  • Participating in program planning, data review, and reporting activities,
  • Ensuring respect, dignity, and confidentiality of all patients and caregivers,
  • Rotating between two assigned counties to ensure consistent technical support across locations,
  • Any other duties as assigned from time to time.

Qualification, skills, and experience

Qualification 

National Non-Relocatable Position-Only for South Sudanese Nationals.

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical, Clinical Medicine with extended work within mental health domain with the humanitarian setting.
  • Training in mhGAP or other recognized mental health intervention approaches,

Skills and experience 

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in mental health and psychosocial support programs,
  • Preferably someone living within Longechuk and Maiwut or willing to live there as Non relocatable.
  • Experience working in humanitarian or low-resource settings is highly desirable,
  • Strong clinical knowledge in mental health case management,
  • Proven experience in training and mentoring healthcare workers,
  • Good spoken and written English,
  • Fluency in Arabic and local languages is an added advantage,
  • Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision,
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills,
  • Ability to work under difficult and remote field conditions.
