We are a growing real estate and lending platform operating across a multi-family portfolio of properties and related entities. The business is focused on scaling efficiently while maintaining strong financial controls, accurate reporting, and disciplined operational execution.

We are seeking a detail-oriented and driven Assistant Controller / FP&A professional to join a high-impact finance team. This role sits at the intersection of technical accounting and strategic financial planning, supporting multiple entities across a real estate and lending portfolio.

The position is hands-on and highly visible, partnering with senior leadership on reporting, forecasting, and financial strategy, while also building and strengthening the control environment needed to support continued growth.

 


Responsibilities

  • Oversee month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes across multiple legal entities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • Prepare and review financial statements on both a Tax and Accrual (GAAP) basis — including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements — ensuring accuracy, consistency, and full compliance across all reporting entities.
  • Manage monthly accruals, supporting schedules, and year-end tax journal entries across both tax-basis and accrual-basis books
  • Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts within AppFolio, ensuring data integrity across entities
  • Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors to support annual audits and filings
  • Prepare and review annual CAM reconciliations, ensuring accurate tenant billing and true-ups
  • Oversee AP/AR functions, ensuring timely processing, clean aging, and improved workflows
  • Build and maintain dynamic financial models in Excel for property performance and cash flow forecasting
  • Deliver monthly reporting packages covering key financial and operational KPIs
  • Perform variance analysis and provide insights to support business decisions
  • Own municipal income and expense filings across the portfolio, including NYC RPIE and similar filings
  • Lead TC201 processes, partnering with external advisors and preparing required financial documentation
  • Maintain a centralized compliance calendar to ensure all filings are completed accurately and on time
  • Design and maintain internal controls to ensure accuracy and safeguard financial data
  • Develop and document accounting policies and SOPs to support scalability
  • Identify and implement process improvements, including automation within AppFolio and Excel
  • Ensure compliance with lender reporting requirements and partnership agreements
  • Manage and mentor a Staff Accountant, providing day-to-day guidance and performance feedback
  • Establish clear expectations and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  • Partner cross-functionally with property management, asset management, and legal teams

 


  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and/or FP&A experience
  • Direct experience in real estate or property management environments, preferably multi-family
  • Strong understanding of NOI, CAM reconciliations, and portfolio-level reporting
  • Hands-on experience with AppFolio is required
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modeling, pivot tables, and dashboards
  • Experience working across multiple legal entities
  • Proven ability to manage and develop junior accounting staff
  • Experience building or improving internal controls and financial processes
  • Familiarity with using AI tools to enhance analysis and automate workflows
