SCADA Developer (Ignition / Rockwell)

Remote automation developer building and upgrading control systems

Location:  Remote — Global (U.S. business-hours overlap required)

Employment Type:  Full-time

Department:  Automation Engineering

Reports To:  Engineering Lead / Owner

ABOUT THE COMPANY

We are a rapidly growing U.S.-based control systems integrator specializing in industrial automation, with more than three decades of experience delivering turnkey control solutions. Recognized among the fastest-growing companies in our market, we design and build systems across pharmaceutical (cGMP), food and beverage, automotive, water and wastewater, and warehouse distribution industries.

Our work spans the full project lifecycle: electrical panel design and fabrication, PLC / HMI / SCADA programming, data historization and reporting, on-site commissioning, validation, and remote support. We are a Rockwell Automation and Inductive Automation (Ignition) partner, and we favor proven, commercial off-the-shelf technology over proprietary tooling so the systems we deliver are easy to use and maintain.

Demand for our services has outpaced our capacity to hire locally. This role is part of a deliberate strategy to build a high-caliber remote engineering bench in Latin America that works alongside our U.S. team on real, ongoing project work.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is the hardest role in our business to fill, and among the most valuable. We build and maintain automation systems for demanding, often regulated, industries, and our project pipeline is full. We need a developer who can take ownership of real automation work — both greenfield builds and upgrades to existing systems — and deliver reliably from day one.

As a SCADA Developer, you will program PLCs and build SCADA / HMI applications that run live production environments. The role is remote and development-focused: PLC and SCADA development, integration, testing, and remote support over VPN. Occasional travel for on-site commissioning is a plus but is not the core of this position. Because our systems run real plants, proactive communication is non-negotiable — we need someone who tells us where things stand before we have to ask.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

PLC Programming

  • Develop and modify PLC programs on Rockwell / Allen-Bradley platforms (Studio 5000, ControlLogix, CompactLogix) for new builds and upgrades.
  • Structure code for reliability, reuse, and straightforward long-term maintenance.

SCADA / HMI Development

  • Build and maintain SCADA and HMI applications in Ignition (Vision and Perspective): tag configuration, screen design, scripting, alarming, and security.
  • Implement historian, trending, and reporting using SQL databases.

Systems Integration

  • Integrate PLCs, SCADA, devices, and databases using industrial protocols (OPC UA / DA, Modbus TCP / RTU, EtherNet/IP, DNP3).
  • Develop functional specifications and maintain clear code and as-built documentation.

Testing & Remote Support

  • Simulate and test applications prior to deployment; verify device communications ahead of commissioning.
  • Provide remote troubleshooting and system modifications over customer VPN connections.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4+ years in industrial automation / controls development.
  • Hands-on Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLC programming (Studio 5000 / ControlLogix / CompactLogix).
  • SCADA / HMI development experience — Ignition strongly preferred (Wonderware / AVEVA or FactoryTalk View acceptable with willingness to move to Ignition).
  • Working knowledge of industrial protocols (OPC, Modbus, EtherNet/IP).
  • Scripting ability (Python / Jython) for Ignition development.
  • Strong, proactive English communication.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ignition Certified or Gold Certified Integrator (Inductive University).
  • SQL and reporting experience (SQL Server, SSRS, or similar).
  • Experience in regulated or process industries — pharmaceutical (cGMP), food and beverage, or water / wastewater.
  • Both greenfield and brownfield (upgrade / retrofit) project experience.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for on-site commissioning.

YOU ARE

  • An independent builder — you can take a specification and deliver working, well-structured code with minimal hand-holding.
  • Proactively communicative — you surface status, risks, and questions early — silence is not an option on live systems.
  • Rigorous — you test thoroughly because you understand your code runs real equipment.
  • A long-term partner — you want a steady stream of interesting work, not a one-off contract.
