The Pharmacy Intern, under the direct supervision of a licensed Medicare Quality pharmacist, will support Medicare Stars and pharmacy quality initiatives designed to improve medication use, member experience, and health outcomes. The pharmacy intern will engage with Priority Health Medicare members, providers, pharmacies, and internal partners to identify and address medication-related opportunities and barriers to care.

This internship provides hands-on experience in Medicare Part D, managed care pharmacy, population health, medication therapy management, Medicare Stars quality measures, and member and provider engagement. The intern will have opportunities to apply clinical pharmacy knowledge while collaborating with pharmacists and other health plan partners to support medication use and quality outcomes.

The intern will contribute to pharmacy quality initiatives related to medication adherence for diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure medications; Statin Use in Persons with Diabetes (SUPD); Concurrent Use of Opioids and Benzodiazepines (COB); Use of Multiple Anticholinergic Medications in Older Adults (Poly-ACh); Medication Therapy Management (MTM); and other Medicare Stars and pharmacy quality initiatives.

Under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern will:

• Conduct outreach to Medicare members to identify and address barriers to medication adherence and other medication-related quality opportunities.

• Utilize motivational interviewing and patient-centered communication techniques to support member engagement and medication adherence.

• Educate members regarding their medications, medication adherence, and relevant disease-state considerations within the intern's scope and under pharmacist supervision.

• Educate members on Medicare Part D benefits and prescription drug coverage to improve understanding of their benefits and overall member experience.

• Review available medication histories, pharmacy claims, and other clinical information to identify potential medication-related opportunities.

• Support Medicare Stars pharmacy quality measures, including medication adherence, SUPD, COB, Poly-ACh use, and other assigned quality initiatives.

• Engage providers and pharmacies to help resolve medication-related barriers, coordinate care, clarify medication therapy, and support closure of identified quality opportunities.

• Support MTM activities, including Comprehensive Medication Reviews (CMRs) and documentation in the MTM platform, as appropriate and under pharmacist supervision.

• Coordinate with health plan staff and other internal partners to address barriers affecting medication use and health outcomes, including identified social drivers of health.

• Document member, provider, and pharmacy interactions accurately and in accordance with applicable policies and program requirements.

• Identify opportunities to improve workflows, member outreach strategies, and pharmacy quality programs.

• Participate in meetings and collaborate with pharmacy, clinical, operational, and other internal teams supporting organizational quality goals.

• Prepare and deliver presentations on pharmacy, Medicare, or quality-related topics as assigned.

• Maintain professional, respectful, and member-focused communication when interacting with members, providers, pharmacies, and internal partners.

• Perform other duties or projects assigned by the Manager of Medicare Quality or pharmacist preceptor.

The summer intern is expected to begin following completion of the intern's spring academic requirements. The position will accommodate three (3) weeks off to complete the pharmacy school's required summer Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE).
