Stillwater Sciences is seeking a Staff Accountant to join our team and work from our Sacramento, CA office. This is an opportunity to play a valued role in supporting our day-to-day business operations, maintaining accurate financial records, and contributing to the company’s financial strength and long-term sustainability.

 

We’re looking for someone who is organized, dependable, detail-oriented, and collaborative. The ideal candidate enjoys taking ownership of their work, working with others to solve problems, and contributing to a positive and supportive team environment. The Staff Accountant will work closely with accounting and administrative staff and will have the opportunity to support a variety of accounting functions and responsibilities.

 

This is a full-time position, approximately 40 hours per week.

The ideal candidate must possess:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to research routine accounting questions, identify discrepancies, and seek appropriate solutions.
  • Initiative and a willingness to take responsibility for assigned tasks while recognizing when to ask questions or escalate issues.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues at all levels.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with careful attention to detail and the ability to meet established deadlines.

 

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Support the accounting team with month-end close activities, including preparing account reconciliations and gathering supporting documentation using Deltek Vantagepoint.
  • Provide as backup support for Accounts Payable processing and other routine accounting functions.
  • Process weekly Accounts Payable vouchers for assigned direct-bill vendors and other recurring expenses.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and research routine reconciling items.
  • Maintain and reconcile prepaid expense accounts.
  • Maintain tracking, recording, and reconciling fixed asset activity.
  • Prepare and post routine general journal entries, cash disbursement entries, accruals, and other accounting transactions.
  • Assist with the calculation, tracking, and recording of sales tax, business license fees, and other applicable taxes and fees.
  • Perform basic review and verification of AP vouchers and accounting entries for completeness, accuracy, and proper documentation.
  • Assist with accounting process improvements, including testing and implementation of automated workflows.
  • Research and resolve routine accounting differences and escalate more complex issues to Controller.
  • Assist with special projects and other accounting tasks as needed.

 

 

Required qualifications include:

  • 1–2 years of accounting experience or equivalent education and relevant experience.
  • Associate degree in accounting, or currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • Experience with account reconciliations, Accounts Payable, journal entries, or month-end close activities is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of basic financial accounting principles, including accrual accounting, cutoff periods, account reconciliations, and capitalization concepts.
  • Ability to prepare clear and organized supporting documentation for accounting transactions and reconciliations.
  • Experience using an ERP financial software system, such as Deltek Vantagepoint, or other ERP software is preferred.
  • Experience working in an architecture or engineering firm, or another industry that maintains job cost or project cost information, is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail, follow-through, and willingness to ask questions and learn new processes.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with accounting team members and staff at all levels.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook, and familiarity with Adobe Acrobat. Experience with PivotTables, SUMIF, and other Excel functions is preferred, or a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Personal integrity and sound judgment in working with confidential information.

 

 

Compensation and Job Details:

  • This is a full-time, 40 hours/week non-exempt position that can be performed out of our Sacramento office.
  • Hybrid schedule with minimum of 24 hours/3 days a week in the office.
  • For the Staff Accountant position, we anticipate the hourly rate to be $34.12 - $37.52 per hour. Pay rate is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
  • Pay within this range is determined in good faith and based on a combination of factors, which may include relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance expectations, shift and travel requirements, and business or organizational needs. For candidates who meet the stated qualifications and experience for this role, Stillwater typically targets pay near the first quartile of the range, recognizing that individual placement may vary.
