Purpose of the Role:

As a MOF Chemist Co-op, you will contribute to the research and development of advanced sorbent materials for carbon-capture applications, with a primary focus on porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials. You will conduct laboratory-based MOF synthesis, characterization, and property investigations while supporting research projects and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. The role will also provide opportunities to contribute to broader CO₂ sorbent development initiatives, including porous polymer sorbents for direct air capture applications.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Currently pursuing a 3rd or 4th year university degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related discipline, with at least 8 months of laboratory experience in an academic or industrial setting.
• Hands-on experience with laboratory synthesis and purification, with two- to three-step small-molecule organic synthesis experience considered an asset.
• Experience with characterization techniques such as TGA, gas sorption analysis, FTIR, SEM, XRD, and/or NMR, with the ability to analyze and interpret experimental data.
• Knowledge of NMR interpretation, spectral assignments, XRD analysis, ChemDraw, Mercury, GCMC simulations, Ab Initio calculations, or related computational methods is considered an asset but not required.
• Strong attention to detail, time management, adaptability, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.

What Success Looks Like in This Role:

• Safely and consistently conduct laboratory experiments related to MOF synthesis, characterization, and property investigations for CO₂ capture applications.
• Generate accurate, reliable experimental data and apply appropriate characterization techniques to evaluate sorbent structure and performance.
• Research and apply relevant scientific literature to support sorbent development and contribute to research projects and technical discussions.
• Clearly communicate research findings through technical reports, presentations, Excel-based analysis, and participation in team meetings and seminars.
• Maintain well-organized experimental setups, chemical inventories, SDS documentation, and purchase requests while supporting Svante’s health and safety and lean culture.
