Responsibilities

  • Work with Captain to ensure the safe and reliable daily operation of their push boat
  • Work with Captain to ensure safe and reliable daily movements of the United Bulk Terminals fleet
    • Make-up and break down tug to/from barges
    • Inspect and, if necessary, pump barge voids
    • Inspect fleet mooring equipment, including dolphins, monopiles, buoys, cables and lines
    • Install, remove and inspect barge navigation/running lights as necessary
    • Maintain barge mooring lines and cut/splice new lines as necessary
    • Tie up barges as directed and assist shoreside line handlers
    • Handle line boat rigging and account for facility owned rigging
  • Communicate in clear, well-spoken English with other crew members in person and over radios
  • Perform regularly scheduled routine and emergency maintenance and repair of primary tug, barges and assist tugs, including chipping, scaling and painting
  • Handle lines on barge/tug and dock when required
  • Perform general cleaning of Tug as directed by Captain or Port Captain
  • Perform general and preventative maintenance of tug machinery as directed by the Captain or Port Captain
  • Previous experience as a Deckhand aboard a tug engaged in fleet work, preferred
  • TWIC
  • Ability to get along with crew members in confined quarters for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours
  • Ability to work 2 weeks on / 1 week off schedule (unless otherwise agreed), around the clock shifts and holidays and weekends
  • Willingness and ability to be flexible

  • The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces
  • Must be physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto barges and up and down ladders.
  • Must be able to work in difficult conditions with exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, wind, heat, etc.)
  • Must be comfortable working aboard boats and barges using heavy lines, winches, and mechanical tools for repairs
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and work at protected heights up to 160 feet
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
