Responsibilities

  • Provide a full range of pediatric medical services to newborns, children, adolescents, and young adults in outpatient and applicable inpatient settings.
  • Conduct routine, acute, and chronic medical evaluations and examinations involving all pediatric organ systems.
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage pediatric illnesses and medical conditions while providing appropriate counseling to patients and families.
  • Provide preventive healthcare services, including immunizations, screenings, developmental assessments, and routine pediatric examinations.
  • Evaluate and provide appropriate care or referrals for developmental and learning disabilities, emotional and adjustment concerns, and suspected child abuse or neglect.
  • Perform or clinically oversee appropriate diagnostic and minor surgical procedures within the scope of practice and established clinical protocols.
  • Provide clinical oversight, direction, and instruction to other healthcare professionals, pediatric residents, students, and supporting clinical personnel.
  • Participate in patient-care reviews, peer review, Performance Improvement, Risk Management, and other quality-improvement activities.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, concise, and legible medical documentation in accordance with clinic directives and applicable requirements.
  • Respond effectively to emergency patient situations, follow established protocols, initiate appropriate interventions, and notify designated personnel of issues requiring additional assistance.
  • Participate in Family Advocacy Program activities as directed, including appropriate medical examination, documentation, and reporting.
  • Attend required meetings, continuing education, in-service training, and MTF annual training programs.

The Pediatrician is expected to:

  • Maintain productivity consistent with other healthcare professionals performing comparable services.
  • Practice within established clinical, ethical, legal, and professional standards.
  • Follow infection-control procedures, aseptic techniques, universal precautions, and requirements governing infectious waste.
  • Maintain awareness of patient rights, privacy, safety, and professional accountability.
  • Exercise appropriate clinical judgment and delegation when directing healthcare team members.
  • Participate in continuing education and required MTF training.
  • Maintain proficiency with applicable clinical information systems, including MHS GENESIS, and comply with applicable communication and documentation requirements.

Requirements

  • Education:
    • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
    • Graduation from a qualifying medical school in the United States or Canada; an approved medical school recognized through the applicable AMA/Liaison Committee on Medical Education pathway; an AOA-approved college of osteopathy; or an international medical school graduate with evidence of ECFMG certification
    • Completion of an accredited residency approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
    • Clinical experience sufficient to meet applicable credentialing and competency requirements
  • Licensure:
    • Must possess and maintain a full, current, valid, unrestricted medical license meeting the state requirements for the location where services are performed
    • The license may not have limitations, stipulations, or pending adverse actions
    • An equivalency determination may not be requested as a substitute for the education requirements for this labor category
  • Certifications:
    • In addition to the Basic Life Support certification required under the base contract, the Pediatrician must possess and maintain:
      • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification recognized by the American Board of Pediatrics
      • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification recognized by the American Board of Pediatrics
  • Board Certification:
    • Board certification in Pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics that are members of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists, as applicable
    • A recent residency graduate may qualify if within 12 months of residency completion and scheduled for the applicable board examination or awaiting board examination results
    • Board examination results must be provided to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth within one week of receipt
    • Failure to pass the applicable board examination results in ineligibility to provide services under the task order
  • Experience:
    • Candidates must meet one of the following:
      • Minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience as a Pediatrician within the last two (2) years; or
      • Be a recent pediatric residency graduate within the last twelve (12) months
  • Work Schedule:
    • Contract/coverage position; minimum of 16 hours per pay period. Individual coverage periods will be at least 6 hours and no more than 12 hours
