Position Summary

Job Type:                    Permanent Part-time, 20 hours per week

Hours of Work:           Primarily daytime, occasional evening or weekend work may be required

Reporting to:              Recreation Manager

Department:               Recreation

 

Tla’amin Nation is seeking an individual to fill the position of Cook at ʔayɩštən ʔaye (Cousin’s House). The Cook is responsible for planning and preparing nutritious meals for program participants and čičuy (children) while ensuring a safe, clean, and culturally respectful kitchen environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin policies, standards, practices and procedures as directed by the Recreation Manager. Maintains confidentiality as required regarding citizens, members, clients, employees and general matters of the Nation.

 

  • Collaborates with manager, dietitian, and program staff in developing a lunch menu plan in accordance with accepted nutritional guidelines such as Canada’s Food Guide for healthy eating and the individual dietary needs of the čičuy.
  • Prepares, cooks and serves meals in accordance with safety and health standards and the approved menu plan.
  • Assist ʔayɩštən ʔaye staff with serving food and clean-up.
  • Ensures safety of all relevant čičuy and staff by being mindful of food allergies.
  • Oversees the operation of the cooking facilities and equipment and ensures their cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Develops a weekly shopping list of foods necessary for the preparation of program snacks and lunches, purchases items, and stores all items following safety and health standards.
  • Maintains an inventory of food and other related items.
  • Incorporate traditional and seasonal foods where possible
  • Prioritize fresh, nutritious, and when possible, locally sourced ingredients.
  • Prepare meals for special gatherings or events.
  • Assist staff or volunteers working out of kitchen during special gatherings.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Training, Education, Experience

  • Minimum Grade 12
  • Minimum 1-2 years hands-on experience in food preparation, cooking and kitchen operations.
  • Experience planning and executing meals for large groups.
  • Experience developing and maintaining food safety standards including safe food handling, storage and sanitation.
  • Experience coordinating food and supply purchasing, inventory control, and stock replenishment.
  • Current Food Safe Certificate.
  • Successful Criminal Record check with vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Class 5 BC Driver’s License and acceptable Driving Record.
  • Current Basic First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience working with or within an Indigenous community.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of Canada’s Food Guide and healthy eating nutritional requirements.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment.
  • Ability to identify common kitchen hazards and knowledge of how to safely reduce their risk.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with čičuy, staff, and families.
  • Ability to make and follow a budget.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to stand for periods of time and carry some heavy food items.
  • Well-developed oral communication and reading skills.
  • Ability to be punctual and reliable.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment.

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in a kitchen setting within a community program space. Adherence to all WorkSafe regulations and safe work practices is required as well as to Tla’amin Nation’s Safety policies and protocols.
