Boiler Instrument & Control Technician

Position Summary

To operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair boiler instrumentation, controls, and safety systems supporting campus steam and hot water operations. To monitor system performance, perform required safety testing and documentation, and ensure compliance with all regulatory and manufacturer standards. To collaborate with utility teams to support continuous, safe, and efficient boiler operations.

Essential Accountabilities:

1.      Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs steam and hot water boiler systems, including burners, pumps, valves, safety devices, controls, and associated piping.

2.      Diagnoses and repairs combustion and burner management control systems, including flame safeguard systems, fuel-air ratio controls, and safety interlocks.

3.      Performs and documents all required annual safety device testing and certifications in accordance with ASME, NFPA, manufacturer, and regulatory standards.

4.      Monitors boiler system performance using building automation systems (BAS) and control interfaces and respond to alarms and system abnormalities.

5.      Collaborates with HVAC, chilled water, and energy management teams to support integrated campus utility operations.

6.      Maintains accurate service, inspection, and certification records using the computerized

maintenance management system (CMMS) and other digital platforms.

7.      Provides technical support and field expertise for capital projects, system upgrades, and boiler retrofits.

8.      Participates in scheduled on-call rotations and responds to after-hours system failures, alarms, and emergency conditions to restore boiler operations and protect personnel and facilities.

9.      Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

ž Advanced knowledge of steam and hot water boiler systems, combustion controls, safety devices, and operating principles

ž Strong understanding of ASME codes, NFPA standards, and applicable EPA and safety regulations

ž Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and technical manuals

ž Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and control system faults using diagnostic tools

ž Experience working with PLCs, VFDs, BAS systems, and CMMS platforms

ž Strong documentation, reporting, and record-keeping skills

ž Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with internal teams and external vendors

Hourly Pay Range: 

$27.85 - $36.20

Associate's degree in Electronics, Industrial Controls, Electrical or a related field and five (5) years of related experience is required. Work experience may substitute for the education requirement. Completion of a recognized boiler technician training program and experience working in institutional, industrial, or utility environments is preferred.

MVR (Motor Vehicle Record): 

Driving record must meet University underwriting guidelines, including:

• Valid U.S. driver’s license

• Minimum age of 21

• At least three years of driving experience

• Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
