Position Overview:

The Area Coordinator/Community Director is a full time, 12 month, live- in professional, student facing position providing leadership and oversight for the apartment area in the UMBC residential system. This position leads community building, programming and student success under the leadership of the Residential Life Department.

Reporting directly to the Director for Residential Education, The Area Coordinator (AC) supports the residential experience by providing comprehensive management of 1-2 residence halls, or multiple apartments units that houses approximately 600-900 residents and supervises 1 graduate assistant and 8-20 Resident Assistants (RA). This position will lead summer housing operations in collaboration with Housing Services and chair a department committee. Primary duties and responsibilities involve: community development, residential engagement, and student learning; building administration and operations; supervision and management; student success and leadership development; crisis management and student support; as well as organizational leadership. This role is optional live in assigned residential space and serves in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation.

Telework:

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the day-to-day operations of buildings in the assigned residential community. 

  • Accurately implement established occupancy & facilities management processes as prescribed. This includes but is not limited to openings and closings; roster verification audits; facilitation of administrative room relocations, resident check-ins and check-outs; health and safety inspections, room readiness, and maintenance reporting. 

  • Cultivate and maintain an inclusive residential community experience that is aligned with departmental learning outcomes.

  • Responsible for purchases and reconciliation with procurement card and d-card 

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate graduate student staff

  • Conduct regular 1:1 supervision meetings grounded in coaching and developmental feedback.

  • Develop staff capacity in leadership, ethical decision-making, and inclusive practice through development of supervision toolkits and coaching models with student staff.

  • Support the residential experience in the assigned community through appropriate and accurate use of software and systems for building operations, student support, engagement, and programming (StarRez, Advocate, PeopleSoft, Google Suite, Office 365, Canva, etc.)

  • Maintain an active and visible presence within the residential community through intentional engagement.

  • Collaboratively advise the apartment community council (CC) with a graduate assistant. 

  • Promote the efforts of department-sponsored student leadership groups: Resident Student Association (RSA) and National Residence Hall Honorarium (NRHH). 

  • Attend and actively engage within departmental, meetings, retreats, and development offerings.

  • Engage in departmental, divisional, and institutional committee work

  • Engage in collateral work assignments as assigned: Summer Housing Operations

  • Embody the Division of Student Affairs Commitments in daily work, relationships, and decision-making. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • One year of full-time (or part-time equivalent) experience residence life experience 

  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence 

  • Experience working with diverse student populations and active work towards the creation of an inclusive community 

  • Ability to consistently manage multiple simultaneous priorities in a high-energy environment requiring 

  • Experience working non-traditional work hours within Residence Life as well as maintaining a presence in the community

  • Experience serving in an on-call duty rotation

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Services, Counseling, or a related area strongly preferred.
  • Experience with a residential curriculum or restorative practices.

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills; competent computer and Microsoft Office skills.

  • Strong work ethic. 

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and team-building skills.

  • Ability to provide student-centered and customer service oriented response to individuals and community.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as active listening skills.

  • Flexibility and adaptability in shifting from one task to another.

Salary:

Salary: $55,500 - $57,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
