The Michele Bowman Underwood Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami invites applications for one faculty appointment in Spanish, in the field of Global Hispanophone Studies with additional expertise in Digital Humanities. The tenure-track/tenure-eligible appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor and would begin August 15, 2027. We seek a dynamic scholar whose research and teaching focuses on Global Hispanophone Studies working on Spain with a comparative trans-Atlantic (including Latin America), African, Pacific, Asian, and/or transnational approach, including migration, economic and cultural flows from the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa into Spain, and from Latin America and Europe to Asia. Beyond expertise in Global Hispanophone Studies and Digital Humanities, areas of scholarly interest may include cultural analytics, critical media studies, and digital literacy. Building on the College’s strength in Digital Humanities and AI, this appointment advances global engagement, study abroad (UMadrid), experiential learning, interdisciplinary research, and innovative scholarship through digital projects and publications across the literary, visual, and cultural productions of the Global Hispanophone. It also prepares students to engage critically and ethically with emerging technologies and strengthens digital literacy.

We particularly encourage applications from candidates whose research explores the intersections of media, politics, the arts (including visual arts, film, literature, etc.), and digital culture in the Global Hispanophone. Applicants whose work bridges languages, regions, or disciplines – such as comparative/critical media studies, visual culture, or global DH – are especially welcome. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Spanish on the literary, visual, and cultural productions of the Global Hispanophone, as well as courses (in English and Spanish) in Digital Media Studies, Cultural Studies, or related interdisciplinary areas. Additional responsibilities include advising at all levels of the program, and service on departmental and university committees.

Qualifications:

●      Ph.D. in Spanish, Comparative Literature, Digital Humanities, Cultural Studies, Media Studies, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

●      ACTFL Superior level fluency in Spanish and English.

●      Demonstrated excellence in teaching and an active, innovative research agenda.

●      For Associate Professor: a record of leadership, program-building, or administrative experience will be desirable.

Interested applicants must apply online through the University’s Careers Website. Applicants should compile the following into a single PDF document and upload it under the CV/Resume link: cover letter, CV, teaching statement, and research statement. Please note that a writing sample and three reference letters to be sent directly to the department may be expected for selected candidates at a later stage. Applications received on or before December 4, 2026 will be given full consideration, though the search committee will continue to accept applications until the position is filled.

For further information about the position, please contact the department Chairperson, Dr. Lillian Manzor. General information about the department can be found at the department’s website.
