The Department of Physiology and Biophysics has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Associate 2 to work on-site in Miami, FL.


The Research Associate 2, SOM contributes to the University’s research activities under the supervision of senior staff. Moreover, the incumbent understands, interprets, and complies with research policies and protocols.


  • Performs specialized and complex experiments/studies.
  • Participates in the publication of significant research results.
  • Advances expertise through education, training, and research.
  • Writes extramural grants/proposals to gain support when appropriate.
  • Collects, prepares, analyzes, dissects, and evaluates specimens and tissue cultures.
  • Weighs and anesthetizes laboratory animals for experiments.
  • Operates sensitive and highly complex laboratory equipment.
  • Performs calculations to complete research test results.
  • Performs photography and dark room processing.
  • Participates in training sessions and workshops.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

The Research Associate 2 will conduct fluorescent immunohistochemistry, and image the results using wide-field and confocal microscopy. In addition, they will work with Dr. Chaudhari and her associates to analyze transcriptomics data that have already been obtained. These analyses will require a working knowledge of R software and a willingness to learn application for gene expression studies.

The Research Associate 2 will also be responsible for maintaining a small colony of a few transgenic mouse strains, and for some general lab management.


Specific duties and responsibilities for this position include:


· Managing mouse colony: design efficient breeding schedules, genotype, maintain pedigree and inventory records.

· Immunohistochemistry: cryosectioning, staining with fluorescent antibodies, wide-field and confocal microscopy, documenting results, keeping comprehensive electronic and selected paper records.

· Lab Maintenance: order supplies, keep records


All above tasks include and require consulting regularly with Supervisor, Dr. Chaudhari, to design and interpret experiments as well as coordinate activities with other researchers in the lab. The Research Associate 2 is expected to report progress regularly to Supervisor frequently and at key decision points.
