About the Role

~2 min read

We are seeking motivated and reliable Research Phlebotomists, with previous experience in the collection of bio-samples (blood, saliva, finger-prick), to support the UQ Concussion Study at our world-leading Queensland Brian Institute on a casual basis.

The UQ Concussion Study is based on a partnership between World Rugby, Rugby Australia, the Great Public Schools Association (GPS) and focuses on developing a biomarker for concussion diagnosis and its recovery. The study will recruit participants from schools in South-East Queensland, and a multitude of data elements such as demographics, cognitive data, and bio-specimen samples, will be collected from participants at different timepoints.

In this role, you will provide support to school staff and participants at participating schools. Key duties will include bio-sample collection including phlebotomy, record keeping, facilitating data collection processes at schools and providing support to the study sites when needed.

These are casual positions and as such, work hours will vary from week to week depending on participant availability. Please note, due to the nature of the study, applicants will need to be able to work flexible out of hours and/or on Saturdays during the GPS rugby season (May to September). Applicants must also have access to their own reliable transport to travel to study sites.

Ideal candidates will be reliable, organised and able to work self-directed in a busy environment. You must be able to work with school staff and adolescent participants in a respectful and supportive manner, and you will be able to provide clear and easy-to-follow instructions regarding all study procedures to both school staff and participants/parents as required.

In addition, you will possess:

  • Certificate III in Pathology Collection (HLT37215) or an equivalent Australian recognised qualification.

  • Previous training and experience in phlebotomy is essential. Conducting venepuncture on adolescents would be highly regarded. Training in all other study procedures will be provided.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work autonomously i.e. flexibility to attend study sites at short notice, work autonomously and in small teams with a wide range of varied stakeholders.

  • Strong organisational skills i.e. ability to keep organised records, and report self-directed, in timely manner.

  • Proficient in the use of the Microsoft office suite products including Word, Excel and Outlook.

This may also include checks relating to gender-based violence matters or other integrity and conduct requirements.

We are dedicated to equity, diversity and inclusion and recognise that career pathways and opportunities differ.
