Data Engineering Lead

We are seeking a Data Engineering Lead to play a senior, hands‑on leadership role within Westpac Data Platforms (DP). This role is responsible for leading high‑performing data engineering teams and delivering production‑grade data solutions that support enterprise‑wide data initiatives. 

You will combine strong technical depth with clear delivery ownership, working closely with product owners, service owners, and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into scalable, reliable data products. You will also help shape how agentic AI is adopted to improve engineering productivity and quality across the data lifecycle. 

• Lead and mentor cross‑functional data engineering and analytics teams across onshore and offshore locations. 
• Own end to end delivery of data streams, from discovery and design through build, testing, deployment, and operational support. 
• Own and drive the agentification of engineering workflows—transforming design, development, and testing through the responsible use of agentic AI. 
• Drive high standards of technical quality, production readiness, and release discipline. 
• Partner with product owners and business stakeholders to define priorities, scope, and success measures. 
• Architect and oversee data pipelines using Python, SQL, Azure Synapse, and Informatica. 
• Ensure data quality, governance, lineage, and lifecycle management across platforms. 
• Communicate complex technical topics clearly to senior stakeholders, supporting informed decision‑making. 

• Extensive experience in data engineering and analytics within large, complex enterprise environments. 
• Experience in AI engineering and GenAI delivery, including leading end-to-end delivery of AI/GenAI solutions—from discovery and design through deployment and production support. 
• Able to build and operationalise GenAI using modern patterns (prompting, RAG, agents/tool use) with appropriate guardrails. 
• Experience integrating AI capabilities into enterprise platforms and cloud environments, ensuring performance, resilience, security, and cost-effective scaling. 
• Proven leadership of senior engineers and distributed delivery teams, fostering high performance and strong engineering standards. 
• Strong hands-on expertise in Python, SQL, Informatica, Unix, and Control‑M, with the ability to dive deep when required. 
• Experience delivering data solutions on Azure platforms, including Azure Synapse, within enterprise-scale architectures. 
• Solid experience with Snowflake and Teradata in large, production environments. 
• Strong understanding of data architecture, data modelling, and integration patterns, with the ability to design scalable and maintainable solutions. 
• Experience with agentic AI, autonomous agents, or intelligent automation tools, and an interest in applying these capabilities to real-world data problems. 
• Demonstrated ability to deliver production-grade solutions, underpinned by strong operational discipline and supportability. 
• Experience engaging senior business stakeholders, translating complex requirements into clear technical outcomes. 
• Clear communication skills, with confidence operating in governance, risk, and release forums, and experience supporting large-scale data platform modernisation initiatives. 

• Experience supporting large‑scale data platform modernisation initiatives. 
• Exposure to data migration and integrated testing environments. 
• Experience working in regulated environments with strong data governance requirements. 
• Background in Lean, Design Thinking, or scaled agile delivery frameworks.
