Zocdoc is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build the data platform that connects our products with analytics, machine learning, and operational systems. This role sits on the Data Engineering team at the boundary of backend engineering and data infrastructure. You will build APIs, libraries, schemas, services, and supported workflows that help engineers publish and use data safely.

Your work will cover the path from source-defined contracts and validation through reliable event and batch delivery to data activation in products and business systems. You will help make quality, ownership, observability, and privacy part of the platform, while giving teams a clearer path to ship without depending on Data Engineering for every integration.

• Excited to build platform products for other engineers, turning ambiguous problems into practical APIs, SDKs, shared libraries, command-line tools, and services that you also help operate.
• Interested in the full lifecycle of data, including how it is defined at the source, evolves safely, reaches consumers, and is adopted without disruptive migrations.
• Motivated to build privacy, access control, and auditability into everyday engineering workflows rather than rely on manual review.
• Effective at working across product engineering, analytics engineering, data science, security, compliance, and infrastructure to agree on contracts and deliver shared solutions.
• Thoughtful about using AI-assisted development tools and rigorous about reviewing, testing, and maintaining the work they help produce.

• Design, build, and operate services and developer tooling that help engineering teams publish and consume trusted data, including contract workflows, APIs, SDKs, generated types, and validation tools.
• Improve event-driven data paths built on Kafka, Avro, and schema registries, with clear delivery semantics, compatibility rules, and safe schema evolution.
• Create reliable ways to move curated data from the warehouse or lakehouse into products and operational systems, with monitoring, lineage, and clear ownership.
• Design and operate reverse ETL and data activation paths that move curated warehouse or lakehouse data into products and operational systems, with monitoring, lineage, and clear ownership.
• Build compliance capabilities into the platform, including data classification, deletion and masking workflows, access controls, audit trails, and policy enforcement.
• Write infrastructure as code, operate platform services in AWS, and improve service-level indicators, alerts, dashboards, runbooks, and on-call response.
• Partner with internal users, document supported workflows, review designs and code, and help teammates build systems that other teams can adopt.

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including meaningful work on backend, platform, developer infrastructure, or data-intensive systems.
• Strong programming skills in Python, practical experience with SQL, and experience with at least one statically typed language such as C#, Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript.
• A record of building APIs, SDKs, shared libraries, data contract systems, or event publishing frameworks used outside your team, with a solid understanding of schema design, versioning, validation, code generation, and migrations.
• Experience with distributed or event-driven systems, including delivery guarantees, idempotency, retries, ordering, dead-letter handling, and operational failure modes, plus hands-on work with Kafka or a comparable platform and a schema technology such as Avro, Protobuf, JSON Schema, or OpenAPI.
• Experience operating cloud services with automated testing, continuous delivery, observability, infrastructure as code, and incident response, plus familiarity with warehouse or lakehouse platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, or Iceberg.
• Bonus points if you have built software in a regulated environment and understand practical controls for PHI or PII, including access, deletion, de-identification, lineage, and auditing.
