Master Thesis – Identification and compensation of acoustical environments using the loudspeaker to microphone signal path

Signal processing (audio)

2 students completing a Master Thesis, 30 hp each

Axis audio products are installed and used in various kinds of environments (e.g., on a wall, next to a window, in a corner, etc.), which may influence characteristics of the perceived sound, such as frequency response in the listening position.

Therefore, it could be of value to identify the environment the network audio speaker is mounted in, and what kind of characteristics of the environment can be determined. Moreover, since each speaker may be mounted at various parts of a room, with their distinct local environment, speaker specific adjustment of audio output might be beneficial for the overall perceived audio quality or performance.

  • Determine a way to discover or measure acoustic environment of an audio device, by using its built-in microphone and loudspeaker
  • Investigate which type of stimuli works best for determining the acoustic environment (e.g., log-sweep or continuous noise etc.)
  • When measured, how can the perceived sound quality be improved when the acoustic environment is taken into account?
