Duration: 1 Year (Optional 2nd Year for MBA or MHA) | Type: Non ACGME Fellowship
Focus Areas: Innovation • Leadership • Digital Transformation

The Emergency Medicine Telehealth Fellowship is a one-year advanced training program with an optional second year dedicated to pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master of Health Administration (MHA) designed to prepare the next generation of physician leaders to transform emergency care through digital innovation, strategic leadership, and systems level change.

The fellowship integrates administration, research, and education to equip fellows with the knowledge, skills, and experience to reimagine emergency medicine in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. By leveraging telehealth and emerging digital technologies, fellows will learn to extend the reach of emergency medicine beyond the walls of the ED, addressing common patient care barriers, improving access, and enhancing the quality, safety, and experience of care.

Through immersive, hands-on leadership experiences, fellows will become proficient in implementing scalable telehealth solutions that improve operational efficiency, expand clinical access, and advance health system innovation.

The fellow will serve as a VPIT (Virtual Provider in Triage) Operations Director, acquiring advanced leadership experience in the coordination, management, and continuous optimization of a telehealth service spanning multiple, operationally diverse emergency department sites. In addition, they will actively contribute to the operational oversight of the Virtual Urgent Care and SCDC Virtual Emergency Triage services.

Each fellow will design and launch a new telehealth service from concept to implementation. This project includes service design, workflow development, pro forma creation, stakeholder engagement, and executive level pitching, providing practical experience in leading digital transformation within a complex healthcare system.

The fellowship empowers fellows to lead impactful scholarly work that drives the digital transformation of emergency medicine. Through these projects, fellows will learn how to translate data driven insights into operational and clinical improvements that advance telehealth innovation. Each fellow is expected to present their work at two conferences, one regional and one national, and is encouraged to publish in peer reviewed journals.

The fellow will serve as the lead instructor for the Emergency Medicine Telehealth Elective (EMED872), a two-week rotation for fourth year medical students and interprofessional learners. Each block includes two to four students. The fellow oversees all aspects of their experience, including orientation, teaching sessions, clinical observation, and mentorship. This ensures a high-quality, engaging, and collaborative learning environment that promotes understanding and acceptance of telehealth and digital technologies, with the goal of adoption and integration into their future practice.

In addition, fellows will host quarterly Journal Club and Strategic Workgroup sessions, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary discussion, scholarly collaboration, and strategic planning around telehealth operations, innovation, and future program development.

Graduates will emerge as forward-thinking physician leaders equipped to design, implement, and scale telehealth solutions that improve accessibility, efficiency, and quality of care while shaping the future of emergency medicine through innovation, education, and systems leadership. The optional second year offers fellows the opportunity to expand their impact through formal administrative training, earning an MBA or MHA to complement their telehealth and operational leadership experience, positioning them for systemwide or executive level roles in healthcare innovation.
