Senior SAP ABAP Developers (Digital Manufacturing Integration)
Quick Summary
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps.
We are seeking highly experienced Senior SAP ABAP Developers to support a major digital manufacturing integration initiative within a highly regulated aerospace and defense environment. In this remote, contract-to-hire opportunity, you will lead hands-on ABAP development, code remediation, and integration efforts as enterprise systems transition from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA. You will build secure, scalable interfaces connecting core ERP systems with SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (MII), Manufacturing Execution (ME), and SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP). Your expertise will help optimize real-time shop-floor data exchange, improve system performance, and support modern, clean-core SAP architecture. Working closely with functional consultants and distributed technical teams, you will translate complex requirements into robust technical solutions. This role is particularly suited to a senior SAP specialist with extensive brownfield migration experience, strong technical leadership, and a background in project-based manufacturing.
-
Develop, enhance, and maintain SAP ABAP solutions across ECC and S/4HANA environments to support digital manufacturing integration and enterprise system modernization.
-
Design, build, and optimize interfaces connecting SAP S/4HANA with SAP MII, SAP ME, and other shop-floor manufacturing systems using OData services, CDS Views, and ABAP Managed Database Procedures (AMDP).
-
Develop APIs, integration flows, and side-by-side extensions on SAP BTP, applying clean-core principles and modern SAP extensibility practices.
-
Create and maintain custom ABAP objects, User Exits, BADIs, and Enhancement Spots across key manufacturing modules, including Production Planning (PP), Quality Management (QM), Materials Management (MM), and Plant Maintenance (PM).
-
Apply modern SAP development frameworks, including the ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP), where appropriate.
-
Lead hands-on code remediation and optimization activities associated with SAP S/4HANA brownfield migrations, resolving legacy-code issues and supporting migration readiness.
-
Troubleshoot, profile, and tune complex ABAP programs and database queries to ensure reliable, high-performance processing of high-volume, real-time data.
-
Ensure custom code, integrations, applications, and data structures meet applicable aerospace and defense security requirements, including ITAR-related data segregation and secure cloud standards.
-
Collaborate with functional consultants, technical leads, and customer stakeholders to translate specifications into secure, scalable, maintainable solutions.
-
Organize technical work, maintain clear documentation, plan development activities, and take ownership of deliverables while remaining actively involved in coding.
-
Support project-based manufacturing capabilities, including project-level material and cost tracking, work-in-progress visibility, inventory management, and engineer-to-order processes, where applicable.
Requirements

Typically 10–15+ years of SAP experience, with approximately 8–12+ years or more of advanced SAP ABAP development experience. The project description references both 8–12+ and 10–15+ years; candidates should be prepared to demonstrate senior-level expertise.
-
Extensive hands-on experience developing and remediating ABAP code in SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA environments.
-
Mandatory: Experience with at least two to three SAP S/4HANA brownfield migration or implementation projects, including hands-on code remediation.
-
At least one to two substantial projects involving native development in SAP S/4HANA, with three or more years of relevant hands-on experience preferred.
-
Strong practical knowledge of SAP BTP services, such as SAP Integration Suite, Extension Suite, or the BTP ABAP Environment, including side-by-side extensions and decoupled integrations.
-
Deep technical expertise in CDS Views, OData services, AMDP, modern ABAP development, and SAP clean-core principles.
-
Strong understanding of SAP S/4HANA manufacturing data models, database tables, and business logic, particularly across PP, QM, and MM.
-
Demonstrated experience with ABAP performance tuning, complex integration troubleshooting, and high-volume data processing.
-
Strongly preferred: Experience with Project Manufacturing Management and Optimization (PMMO), particularly in project-based manufacturing, aerospace and defense, industrial manufacturing, or engineer-to-order environments.
-
Experience developing integrations with manufacturing execution systems (MES), SAP MII, or SAP ME is an advantage; SCADA-only experience does not meet this specific preference.
-
Familiarity with SAP S/4HANA brownfield migration strategies, SAP Fiori, SAPUI5, and Agile or Scrum delivery methodologies is desirable.
-
SAP BTP or SAP ABAP development certifications are advantageous.
-
Strong analytical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and a disciplined approach to technical documentation and delivery planning.
-
Demonstrated leadership, organization, and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to navigate challenging customer interactions while maintaining a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach.
-
Ability to work independently, lead technical activities, and remain hands-on throughout development and remediation work.
-
U.S. citizenship or relevant regional security clearance may be required due to ITAR regulations and defense contract restrictions.
