A successful applicant would:

  • Have a MS or high degree in Neuroscience or a closely related field
  • Have a good general knowledge of Neuroscience
  • Be comfortable speaking in front of a class
  • Be comfortable using classroom software such as Canvas.

The position is a Teaching Assistant for the Department of Neuroscience in the Georgetown University Medical Center. The course is Basic Neuroscience I, which is a two hour course that meets twice a week (Mondays and Wednesdays). There are over 30 graduate students enrolled (both MS and PhD). There are a lot of aspects of the course – recorded lectures, quizzes most weeks, exams four times during the semester, in-class assignments, short in-class lectures periodically (6-7 times per semester), other in-class events, and review sessions. A Teaching Assistant could help with some small aspects of each of these aspects, depending on their knowledge and availability. It would be particularly useful is the candidate had taken Basic Neuroscience I in a previous year. It is not necessary for the Teaching Assistant to have prior experience teaching.

  • Answer specific questions from students (email or outside of class)
  • Help grade exams
  • Run part of review sessions during the semester
  • Give one in-class lecture (less than 15 minutes)
  • Run Cahoots or Jeopardy events
  • Work with the faculty to identify any students who are struggling

The Teaching Assistant would report to the Course Director regarding each of the duties. The position is necessary due to the heavy teaching load for a four-credit course with a large number of students. The faculty are tenured Professors in the Department of Neuroscience. This position allows more individual attention to the students from both the Teaching Assistant and the Professors.
