Job Description: Operation Theatre (OT) Staff Nurse Job Title: Operation Theatre (OT) Staff Nurse Job Type: Full-time Location: Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu Salary: ₹15,000 – ₹25,000 per month (Negotiable based on experience and clinical competence) Industry: Healthcare / Hospital Department: Operating Room / Surgical Services Reports To: OT In-Charge / Nursing Superintendent / Head of Surgery Job Summary We are seeking a diligent, detail-oriented, and skilled OT Staff Nurse to join our surgical care team in Trichy. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering high standards of perioperative nursing care. You will work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and the surgical support team to ensure optimal patient safety, strict sterile technique adherence, and smooth operating room workflows before, during, and after surgical procedures. Key Responsibilities 1. Pre-Operative Preparation Prepare the operating theatre, ensuring all surgical equipment, monitors, lights, and suction units are fully functional and sterilized. Verify patient identity, surgical consent, pre-op checklist, fasting status, allergies, and blood test results prior to transfer to the OT table. Ensure adequate inventory of required surgical packs, sterile drapes, disposable consumables, implants, and emergency medications. 2. Intra-Operative Duties (Scrub & Circulating) Scrub Nurse Role: Perform surgical hand scrub and gowning/gloving adhering to aseptic guidelines. Arrange sterile instrumentation, sutures, drapes, and supplies systematically on the Mayo stand and trolley. Anticipate surgeon requirements and hand over surgical instruments and supplies smoothly during surgery. Perform rigorous instrument, needle, gauze, and sponge counts before incision closure alongside the circulating nurse. Circulating Nurse Role: Assist the anesthesiologist during induction, intubation, monitoring, and extubation. Position the patient safely according to the specific surgical procedure, ensuring skin integrity and pressure-point padding. Manage theatre documentation, record implants/devices used, and properly label, preserve, and dispatch specimens for histopathology. 3. Post-Operative & Infection Control Assist with dressing the surgical wound and safely transferring the patient to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) / Recovery Ward. Provide an accurate clinical handover to the post-op nursing team regarding intraoperative events, drain status, and vital signs. Oversee proper decontamination, disinfection, and dispatch of used instruments to the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD). Strictly follow biomedical waste (BMW) segregation and universal infection control protocols. 4. Emergency & Equipment Maintenance Promptly assist during code blue or surgical/anesthetic emergencies. Monitor and report any equipment malfunction or biomedical maintenance requirements immediately to the OT supervisor. Required Qualifications & Experience Educational Qualification: Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) OR Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc Nursing) Diploma / Certification in Operation Theatre Technology (OTT) is an added advantage. Registration: Valid registration with the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council (TNC) is mandatory. Experience: 1 to 4 years of clinical experience as an OT Nurse in a recognized hospital or surgical center. Freshers with strong clinical internship exposure in multi-specialty OTs may be considered for the lower end of the salary band. Skills & Competencies Strong grasp of aseptic techniques, sterilization standards, and infection control protocols. Familiarity with standard surgical specialties (e.g., General Surgery, Orthopedics, OB/GYN, Laparoscopy). High level of manual dexterity, situational awareness, and quick crisis-response capabilities. Ability to stand for prolonged hours and remain focused under high-pressure surgical environments.
