School Nurse

Davidson Charter Academy seeks a caring, organized, and student-centered Registered Nurse to support the health and safety of students and staff in our K–8 school community. The School Nurse provides nursing care, responds to medical needs and emergencies, maintains health records, and works with families, school staff, and healthcare providers to address health-related barriers to student learning. This is a 10-month position. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assess and provide appropriate care to students and staff who become ill or are injured at school.
• Respond to medical emergencies and follow school emergency procedures.
• Administer medications in accordance with provider orders, parent or guardian authorization, and school policies.
• Assess students’ health care needs and develop, maintain, and review health care plans, including emergency action plans.
• Coordinate health-related supports for students, including health components of IEPs and other student accommodation plans, as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate, confidential health records and documentation.
• Monitor required student health documentation, including immunization records and health assessments, and communicate with families about outstanding requirements.
• Conduct or coordinate screenings for health conditions that may affect students’ access to learning.
• Communicate with families, healthcare providers, and school staff about student health needs while protecting student confidentiality.
• Provide guidance and training to staff who support students with special health care needs, including medication administration procedures.
• Support communicable disease prevention and response, including outbreak procedures.
• Prepare and submit required school health reports and data to state and local agencies by established deadlines.
• Identify school community health and safety concerns and share recommendations with school leadership.
• Maintain an organized health office and monitor health supplies.
• Perform other duties related to student health and safety as assigned.

Qualifications

• Current, active Registered Nurse license in North Carolina.
• Meets North Carolina’s school nurse qualification requirements through clinical experience or national certification.
• Completes required North Carolina DHHS school nurse training within established timelines.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain them; school or pediatric experience preferred.
• Strong communication, organization, and record-keeping skills, with the ability to maintain confidentiality and work well with students, families, and staff.
  
  

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position is based in a K–8 school environment and may require work across school buildings. The employee must be able to move throughout the school, respond to student needs, and perform the physical tasks required to provide routine first aid and emergency assistance, with reasonable accommodations as needed.

Salary & Benefits *Prorated based on start date

• This position will be compensated according to the North Carolina state salary schedule for school nurses, with salary placement based on verified years of registered nursing experience.
